Cleanup Bendix or replace stater

Cleanup Bendix or replace stater
I have noticed the past two days in about 10 degree weather a stater that doesnt catch on the first attempt. I am sure its the bendix or starter drive. In my younger days on the farm we used to just pull them apart and clean them. Has anybody done this?
If not what starter has proven reliable? I see alot of price differences.

How long has the starter been on there...and on average...how many times a day do you start the vehicle?
And, if you live in a cold weather climate...and starting takes longer than normal...this can prematurely wear out all of the starter components.
If you answer long time or yes to any of the above...replace.
Brian.
