Default 97 Disco stater replacement

first of all being just a weekend warrior mechanic, should I even be attempting to replace starter on my 97 Disco ? And lets say I could reach the bolts on top which I cannot see as of yet, what are they Allen heads?

Yes, Allen heads.

I would suggest using a small pick to clean out all of the crud in the Allen head to make sure that the tool fits into the bottom of the bolt so you don't strip it.

There is a "knock sensor" above the heat shield. You should disconnect it to make sure you don't break the sensor. I just finished mine. I'm a weekend warrior, it took me around 4 hours.

Check the D1 tech section, there is a good write up.

Good luck.

Default who's the idiot that decided an Allen head should hold the starter

cannot get lower starter bolt loosened. Any suggestions besides drilling? Is it 8mm or 5/16?

Lower is the easiest. I think it's 5/16, but can't confirm. Put an extension on it. Make sure the Allen head is fully seated, and wrench on it.

You might need a wobble socket to get it at a slight angle.

It will come. I had issues too.

I'd recommend getting the heat shield out of the way first. Cut it, rip it, manhandle it. Just get it out of there and I wouldn't worry about reinstalling it. This should grant you much better access to the socket cap screws. Use an 8mm. Spray some PB Blaster on there and/or some heat with a torch, after you get the wires our of the way that is. Once the starter is out replace the socket cap screws with regular hex head screws.
