First service
  1. Oil and filter change
  2. Brake fluid change and flush
  3. Tire rotation
Overall check of things
Any service recalls like the emissions dohickey

Items 1-3 are simple enough. DIY and use the money for something useful like hookers and blow college fund

I asked JLR of North Austin and they said “it’s fine to wait until the 21,000 mile service”. In fact I wanted to buy the maintenance pack at the 10k miles and the service rep told me not to waste my money because it would only cover the 21k and 42k service intervals and it would cost more than those 2 combined!

In my dealer, they provide me with a list of services that added up to approximately that same amount. But there was a bunch of things not required by the manual - like additives for gasoline and things like that. I simply crossed out all of those add-ons "recommended" by the dealer and my invoice was closer to $700.

I have been doing them every 5k just for peace of mind. I go to a JLR specialist and each oil change is $190 and the full service was around $600 (including the oil change). This is the first car I have owned and since its a Land Rover I don't wanna take any chances . I am also putting pretty hard miles on it (31k in first year).

Someone needs to do an oil analysis of 20,000 mile Defender sump oil.

That will end the argument about whether it's too long to leave it.

Just because oil is black, doesn't mean it's time to change.
Hell, you'd be changing it every month in a diesel if that were the case.

Defender as a first car...you lucky sod!

My first car was a Ł200 ($300) Triumph that was fourteen years old.

l used to wait in the morning for the postman so he could help me push start it.

After a while he changed his route. When l was late for work for about the tenth time the boss gave me the battery out of his old Roller.

lt was about twice the size and just fitted, after that the car started first time.

Arguments getting resolved online eh?

Here is a 10k mile analysis if it's of any use.

It's useful if you're itching to throw money at a 9800 mile oil change. Me, I'm heading cocksure into the 21k timeline without a care in the world.

Yeah. I've no clue really. I hear very strong opinions on both sides of the discussion. Just throwing it out there as a data point. Possibly an irrelevant and useless one.

DIY Oil change should not void JLR warranty, or am I missing something?

Same for other fluids or pads etc.

(All this considering you know what you are doing.)
