I asked JLR of North Austin and they said “it’s fine to wait until the 21,000 mile service”. In fact I wanted to buy the maintenance pack at the 10k miles and the service rep told me not to waste my money because it would only cover the 21k and 42k service intervals and it would cost more than those 2 combined!

In my dealer, they provide me with a list of services that added up to approximately that same amount. But there was a bunch of things not required by the manual - like additives for gasoline and things like that. I simply crossed out all of those add-ons "recommended" by the dealer and my invoice was closer to $700.

This is the first car I have owned and since it's a Land Rover I don't wanna take any chances . I am also putting pretty hard miles on it (31k in first year).[/QUOTE]
Defender as a first car...you lucky sod!
My first car was a Ł200 ($300) Triumph that was fourteen years old.
l used to wait in the morning for the postman so he could help me push start it.
After a while he changed his route. When l was late for work for about the tenth time the boss gave me the battery out of his old Roller.
lt was about twice the size and just fitted, after that the car started first time.

Someone needs to do an oil analysis of 20,000 mile Defender sump oil.
That will end the argument about whether it's too long to leave it.
Just because oil is black, doesn't mean it's time to change.
Hell, you'd be changing it every month in a diesel if that were the case.

Here is a 10k mile analysis if it's of any use.

Yeah. I've no clue really. I hear very strong opinions on both sides of the discussion. Just throwing it out there as a data point. Possibly an irrelevant and useless one.
