Long time viewer, first time poster here... searched the forums and couldn't find anything mentioning the issue I'm having. I had a rock kicked up by a vehicle in front of me on a road trip (actual rock strike, big one, not related at all to the cracking issues with no impact) and had to have the windshield replaced. My OEM windshield was a Pilkington Heated, with Solar Attenuation and no heads up display, and it had a "coating" you could clearly see (I'm assuming it was the solar attenuation) as the windshield seemed very slightly tinted and you could see two "cutouts" at the top center of the windshield with one on each side of the rear view mirror. The windshield that the dealer ordered (and I paid for) seems to have the correct part number (at least one of them as the number has changed several times) but the windshield that was installed does not have the tinted "coating". It does have the heated filaments. I assumed there was a mix up with the install and they somehow installed the wrong one in my vehicle. After two months of "waiting for a response from Land Rover corporate" the dealership just told me "The engineer called my parts manager and told him to get a picture of the drivers side logo's on the glass. He states if there is a thermometer looking logo with a swirl mark under the thermometer then it has the updated solar windshield". I have been unable to find anything to prove/disprove this statement so far and I've reached out to Pilkington to try to confirm what the windshield stamps mean, or if there has been an "updated" solar windshield for the vehicle that no longer has a visible coating. Wondering if anyone else has had a solar attenuated windshield replaced (recently I guess) and if your replacement still had the coating or not. I have pics as well that clearly show the difference.
That’s super interesting and can’t wait to learn more. I’m going to check out my windshield and markings. I have heated with that cutout film on it. And mine is a ‘22.
I found this website with the logos... but no explanation of the missing "coating" or changes to their solar attenuation (or thermal comfort) products...
Thanks GrouseK9, my bad, I didn't see your post before I made my follow up post. Now I'm wondering if the "coating/film" is not the solar attenuation/thermal comfort and something else instead as the user in that post states he has the thermal comfort logo and no special windshield options. Or maybe thermal comfort and solar attenuating are two different things?
And per the 2022 online manual, my replacement windshield definitely DOES NOT have this "special laminated layer" (or at least its no longer visible, lol).
For anyone interested, I received the following reply from NRG which owns Pilkington, not sure how I feel about it but it seems to line up with the information I got from the dealership:
This means that it is a new technique and the purple colour is no longer visible, but the UV protection is still available?
So everyone with the a normal windshield wouldn't have the thermometer logo?
Hmm…..

If that's true, I would feel wonderful about it. It sounds to me that they upgraded you from the coating (which is visible) to some sort of manufactured glass with the infra red filtering already in it. If it still works, but a better tech - why worry. I'm pretty sure I've never seen a scale on how effectively a window filters out infra-red / solar radiation. If there is a beast and you get real lucky, perhaps there are specs between the two glass types. If not, I'd just move on. Pretty confident that if this is a v2 of the product you'll be good.
Ok. I'm pretty nerdy. I LOVE reading wikipedia and immersing myself in things I don't understand. I geeked out and had to find this. Hopefully it helps someone else who wonder's wtf those hieroglyphics mean.
