Hi everyone! With all the reports of only one key, it makes sense that there is absolutely no information on Defender key fobs beyond 2020ish. Is the 2023 key fob different? I am hoping it is a lot more substantial than in years past! My husband’s LR3 key was waaaay higher quality than his LR4 (2016) in terms of weight and wear. I was thinking I should buy a silicone cover for it but like I mentioned, there is nothing available right now - both in terms of aftermarket 2nd key options and of lesser importance, key covers. Any insight is greatly appreciated, such as “the new key is high quality and will not scratch if you look at it wrong, therefore, you don’t need a silicone key cover”. As for the one key upon delivery situation, I am hopeful that we won’t run into this issue but it won’t be the end of the world (so long as the second key is guaranteed in the near future).

 

I already think the key for my 2022 is substantial enough. It's more solid than my previous Ford key, and any heavier would be obnoxious to have in my pocket.

 

The fob for my 2023 is substantial...too substantial in my opinion. In a world where we are paying with our phone, why do I want to carry a key almost as big as my phone. It would be great to hear that the tech is in place and that we are only a software update from using our phone as the key.

 

I just don’t understand how a dealership/manufacturer can supply just one key with a new vehicle. Inevitably, someone loses their key, the ONLY key. Now what? What is the recourse there? Years ago I had an Evoque, which came with two keys, which is the standard. I went on a trip to the Outer Banks which was an eight hour drive. I always like to prepare for any mishaps, and losing a key while away from home would pose quite a problem, especially with the location probably hours from the nearest Land Rover dealership. So I brought my spare and tucked it away in the rear of the vehicle, figuring if I lost a key a locksmith could get into the vehicle where I could retrieve the spare. Months later, going through a drawer with all my spare keys it occurred to me that the Evoque spare was not in there. For the life of me I couldn’t remember where I had stashed it. A trip to the dealer for a new fob plus programming cost me $825. Total thievery at that price. I eventually found the spare hidden away under the spare tire in the cargo area. But it makes me wonder what happens if someone loses the lone key for their new Defender. Not a situation I would like to be in.

 

I believe the one key is temporary due to the chip shortage. Porsche was also doing this for a little while. The second key is supposed to come at some later date. To you point though if one were to lose the one key they'd be royally screwed.

 

While I agree with you that tech needs to catch up in the automotive key sphere, this is great news for me, as my key only leaves my purse when unlocking my home! As far as dealer-specific apps, I have found that in each of my recent cars, the technology is finicky and to that end, I would not feel comfortable in relying on that method without a back-up key. Though the activity key is a great idea, I am stuck on the stories I have read related to it being inoperable for whatever reason…same goes with current technology. I’m hopeful that the JLR/NVIDIA partnership will yield impressive AI to include a foolproof digital car key in the future but I still think that I will stick to the key fobs for now.

I've used the activity key nearly exclusively every day for the past 14 months and have never had an issue. Never want to carry a bulky key fob again!

 

The activity key is the watch, correct? Do they make a card version that could be put in a wallet or behind a phone?

 

Can you only get the activity key from the factory or can the dealer order it after delivery?
