I'd roll the dice. These things are pretty reliable.

But - if warranty is a sticking point - these things are coming down in price with either factory warranty or CPO (or CPO + factory remaining). Can I ask a pretty basic question? If the Defender you are looking at is around 55-60K -- you might be better off getting one at a JLR dealer that is CPO. I do see good used CPO Defenders still with factory warranty **easily** in the 55-60K price range out there now at LR dealers all over the country -- so if it's around 60k, just get a CPO one with some factory warranty remaining if warranty is a sticking point.

Side note unrelated to Land Rover or Defenders. I 100% agree aftermarket warranties are a gamble. I'They love denying claims and it's not a good experience, at least in my one "go" at them years ago with one I bought at an Audi dealership for my other half's car (a 4.2 A6). The aftermarket warranty the Audi dealer sold me literally covered nothing, it was a waste of money, and then in the 2008 financial crisis this warranty company went belly up. I had no idea until I showed up for something at the dealer's service lane, I realized it -- was a bummer. I had paperwork with Audi and the dealer's name on it and everything. The dealer said there was nothing they could do, even though they sold it to me (for around $5000, I believe. It was a crap situation.

As nashvegas said, shop around as there plenty of CPO Defenders out there for that price range. Be patient and look for the best CPO deal out there. There is a TON of inventory out in the market place.

CPO is 1 year unlimited miles and 2 years up to 100k, which is of course far better than nothing at all however there are also plenty that come off lease get CPO'd and look fine cosmetically but have actually been driven pretty much into the ground has been my experience. What I'm getting at is CPO isn't the be-all end all. If something only has 26k and the vehicle history record looks good and it seems to be immaculate then even without CPO it may well be worth the gamble vs something that's a CPO coming off-lease.

Definitely test drive it, check the vehicle history report, make sure it had the scheduled maintenance done at the JLR dealership etc then go from there. It could be a good deal, again you haven't said what their asking price is. Once you get up to 60k I find it very hard to not just buy a new one and get yourself under the 4 year 50k for not a lot more money to be honest unless you need a really fancy spec. You can get quite a lot for 65k if you're ok with the P300, it's a good engine.

The reason boils down to specs / price / mileage.
I have done a nation wide search for the last 3 weeks, and this particular one has everything I want. I have build my own and it comes out as $87K new, against $52K used with 26k miles on it.
one of my biggest requirements is the light Acorn interior that not a whole lot of dealers spec’d and the Off Road pack (rear e-diff) and lastly the 3rd row that I already have in my current X5 and has proven to be of service at the right time with my fam and daughter’s friends. (I know those seats are tiny, but work great for 6 yr olds!)
The specs mentioned only would come from a personal built purchase, as the JLR salesman told me dealers did not spec many off road and many of the other options I mentioned.

I hate to admit I am one picky ****, but in my future I want to tow a camping trailer (not off-roading of course) but close to trails and private sites, so this Defender already having the Towing package really completes it.

as it turns out (duh) only 3 vehicles with this description are available currently in the continental US and 2 of those have almost double the milles and not so attractive interior / exterior options for about the same price…

I will continue my search off course, receiving the good advice given here by you guys while I get to see this particular case a bit more clear.
The dealer is running my credit at the moment to see what deal they can offer me given the circumstance of the warranty I hoped for it, and most likely will decline the 3rd party warranty offer.

Size of engine? It may affect its payload spec and the size of wheels you can put on. After MY24, 18" becomes not available. My 1 cent.

Steep requirements. Acorn with the 2nd diff and then the tow package, it's going to be rare. I honestly never see any on lots with the 2nd diff, so it would've been a custom order. 52k isn't unreasonable. We know an 87k new one isn't going to be in the 40s four years later when it only has 26k on it so 52k is reasonable IMO, unless you test drive it and there are red flags. If this prev owner is so keen on the offroad pack to me I'd be wondering if this was the 1 out of 10 that actually got off-roaded quite a bit. Have you test driven it or is this all being done by internet/phone?

Sorry for the late specific, The Defender I’m looking at is:
2020 110 P400
$52K at a BMW Dealership
26k miles
Pangea Green
Acorn interior
Off Road pack
Tow Pack
Cold climate pack
Family Comfort Pack (heated 3rd row)
Wireless (not something I need for now)
Original MSRP $81K

I’m very inclined towards the V6 because of the towing aspirations I have for

I”ll miss the Heads Up Display I currently got in my X5, but is not a dealbreaker at all.
I will keep looking while the dealer comes back with an offer later today.

thanks for any advice!

Hey Chief65,
Yes, I had the same reasoning while finding this rare opted one. Regrettably I am doing this on the phone and Internet, and can’t test drive it as I am 1 thousand miles away from the dealership.

The bright side of this is that I can drive it back home through all the pacific coast and maybe lodge at some unique AirBnB off-roady spots with my wify and kids…. Kind of dreamy already.

Get what you want. I've been very specific on the cars I've bought in the past. It took me forever to find a 2014-16 LR4 with the HD package. I bought my 2020 Defender X with no test drive a couple of years ago. I live in Portland and bought it from Riverside Land Rover in S. Cali. I had the sales rep send me a complete walk around video opening up every nook and cranny to make sure all of the options I wanted was on the car. Good luck and let us know!
