The OEM style side steps have 4 bolts that mount to existing holes in the frame. 2 holes that are vertical you could get at cutting the trim while it remains on the vehicle. The other 2 holes that are horizontal, you will need to remove the trim to mount those bolts.
Anyway to install these via the shortcut method? They have horizontal and vertical mounting holes. They are from house of Vulkan. I really don’t want to have to take any trim off I wonder if I can cut off the the vertical mounting holes and just use the other two mounting holes like the ones in the shortcut instructions?
Well, as the aftermarket side steps use
only the two horizontal bolts l am sure it would work.
Could you fit the brackets as they are, and just not fit the side bolts, that you can't get to.
Are the aftermarket brackets steel or aluminum? The ones I have are aluminum so makes me nervous about cutting off the vertical part. I’m guessing the ones with only the horizontal mounting are made of steel

Really what the important thing you found was an install guide with measurements for any aftermarket or oem or oem knockoff defender side step installation. An installation that does not require taking off all the panels and that gives the proper measurements for cutting from the outside. I have linked the guides for the 90 and 110 below
So what you are saying is, l could buy the OEM side steps and use this guide to cut the holes in the trim, so avoiding having to pull the trim panels off and break all the clips?
Has anyone tried this with OEM or aftermarket steps that are designed with the same brackets?
I got steps from Lucky8 for my 90 and really don't want to rip off all that trim....
l fitted OE side steps and didn't bother with the smaller bolts on the side of the brackets, l figured they would be just fine with the main bolts installed.
This means you don't have to pull off all the plastic trim. Although you do still need to make 4 small holes in the plastic under tray to fit the brackets this is quite easy to do.
