For me, I don't want to go through the installation process of drilling holes etc only to find out the smaller mud flaps do nothing in terms of protection. If they do provide some decent protection I'll do it, if not than I'll forgo mud flaps altogether.

Would love to see some "dirty" pictures LOL of the smaller mud flaps to see how well they prevent kick up

Well I just got my truck and my small mudflaps are sitting around waiting for my install. Hopefully this week. I'll drive through some puddles and drive on the beach then post pictures if nobody else does by then.

Just got word that my ‘modern’ mud flaps are being delivered shortly, will post pics after I install them. To me, I think the ‘classic’ mud flaps look like those on a school bus, and my Defender looks waaay too good for that. I really don’t think a few extra inches of plastic are going to make a massive difference in controlling any dirt kicked up. Besides, that’s why I keep a hose and bucket. If your wheels are full of dirt and mud, and you’re hoping the mud flaps keep it off the lower body, it seems like the vehicle still needs a wash anyway. But hey, put on whatever you think looks best.

I'm very fond of the big dirt catchers in both the new and old Defender.
In practical terms, though, with the new Defender, they're too close to the wheel, and when backing up in the field, a rock can get crushed against the wheel quickly by the inequality, and the subsequent shift of the car causes it to be ripped off. The old Defender is not in danger of this. They're pretty far away as you can see in the photos above. For this reason, I have chosen smaller dirt catchers on my new car.

I have a brand new pair front & rear for sale if anyone is interested. I bought both but went with the classic instead. PM if any interest.
