Anyone install the Octa rep spare on a regular defender?
For those of you have bought the Octa reproduction wheels for your regular defender, have any of you bought a 5th wheel to mount on your spare tire carrier?
I know that on the Octa, they redesigned the rear bumper with a cutout to accomodate the larger wheel and tire.
I also read somewheel the LR also beefed up the carrier and hinge on the door to account for the weight of the wheel and tire combo.
What is everyone doing for a spare if you're running the Octa reps?
Thank you
So no need to modify the carrier for the spare and the tire clears the bumper?
Any photos you can share or message me?
Thanks!
The clearance will have almost nothing to do with a replica wheel vs octa vs standard Defender wheel aside from how the offset of any given wheel brings the tire toward the bumper.
The biggest factor is really just the tire itself. Too large and it's not going to mount. Simple as that.
Having looked at the the bumpers, I'd bet that anything larger than 32.5 -ish, won't bolt right on, and a 33", the octa spec, won't actually fit, or if it does, it will be contact and a snug push to make it work.
This is why there are the spare tire mount offset plates like sold by lucky8 and other places. Really any modern rover adapter will work as there is nothing Defender specific to the Defender about the stud geometry or threading. A plate made for a Disco ii or lr3/4 ought to work fine.
Just keep in mind that replica wheels, are almost always a wider ET (offset) in order to "look cool". This will help in the fit. However, a factory octa wheel will sit closer to the mount and therefor close the remaining gap which will then depend more on the tire size you choose.
A normal defender spec tire shape ought to fit fine with either wheel though because they do leave a little room to spare.
Even on the OCTA bumper, going to 35" is probably the max, and will also probably touch if too wide a tire choice. Mine has a 34" but it is as narrow as there is at 275/65-20, so I have about 1/2" remaining clearance, maybe slightly less.
Lastly, not all tires are the actual same measurements. This is a Nokian Outpost NAT 275/65-20. Now that I'm seeing the photo again, a 35" would more likely require the mount adapter to shift the tire out and up. Then a 37 might work LOL.
