Buying a 2020 First Edition out of Warranty
Hello,
I am getting out of my current car due to a Lemon Law buy back (Mercedes). When I was at their dealership I noticed they had a used 2020 Land Rover defender with 39k miles. Took it for a test drive and enjoyed the car. The car is being sold at $57k and if I were to buy a 3 year 36 mile warranty it tacks on $6200 so after taxes and fees the car comes out to around 65-66k. I was wondering if anyone here would consider buying this car out of warranty? I am able to pay for necessary things that come up with the vehicle, but I am worried about small things adding up through time. Was hoping to get some insight from current owners.
Thank you

For comparison, I paid approximately $71k for my MY22 Defender X-Dynamic SE when new. MSRP was $68k, $3k in options brought it to $71k. So $65-66k for a vehicle two years older than my Defender does seem a bit high to me. Dealerships make a nice profit at that markup. I would try to negotiate that price down. Private seller could be considerably less. Good luck with your search. I’m very satisfied with my Defender, lots of smiles per miles.
I was in the market recently and ultimately bought new, but I would say that price is in line with what I’ve seen across the US. The defender seems to have the “enthusiast” price bump, like a Tacoma or Wrangler. Depending on options, it could be a decent deal and I agree, you should try to negotiate for a discount if you can, just because. I negotiated 5k off a new unit similar to mine, but when I found the close to perfect one for me, i was only able to get 3k off. YMMV.
Regarding owning without a warranty. A lot of owners have shared the common items that go wrong with 4 year old defenders. Plastic Coolant lines, etc. There doesn’t seem to be any major issues like engines blowing or other major mechanical issues. I would stick that 6k away and use it if you have any problems.

You should try and get that car for the list price WITH the extended warranty. And makes sure it’s a good warranty that covers electronics.
Mechanically, Defenders and RRs are pretty darn sound. It’s the computers and electronics that need constant reboots and software updates.
$6k is a lot of money to just set aside for random repairs. And the older these things get the more quick/easy fixes that are getting released.
After being a Toyota fan boy my whole life, I bought my 110 new in 2020 & have 40k now. I’m gonna wing when the warranty expires in June.
I will say, if you are someone who never pops the hood of a vehicle or research into repairs and DON’T want to learn about the repair, then tread carefully. But if you like cars and have the budget to be proactive with repairs, it’s a great car to own.

Have you tried building one to see what it costs?
The P300 (which is what I have) starts at $60k and you are getting a brand new vehicle with a longer warranty.

It won't be exactly as cheap as that used one, but it won't be far off of it.

Anyway, that's my two cents... custom ordering a Defender is fun times, enjoy! If you do take the plunge I hope you have great luck with it.

I agree 100%, if OP is willing to spend almost 60k used then I'd highly recommend a brand new one. #1 you don't know who owned this or how hard they are on their equipment. Especially with offroad focused vehicles people can really beat on them sometimes. With new you'll be under warranty and if it's anything like how my Defender was you may well end up getting serious use out of the factory warranty. The other thing I would want to get a feel for is how the JLR dealership in your area treats you when come in because if the dealership experience is bad I'd steer clear of doing business there and look at other brands. I wouldn't want to deal with jackasses because this thing may be going in for service a lot. When I had mine there was favoritism shown as far as service and loaner availability to folks who purchased it there rather than at some other dealership, it worked in my favor as I had ordered mine from them. Granted those were pandemic days so there were long waits for parts etc, now I'm sure things have eased up a lot, YMMV.

I will say there is a CPO 2023 with 2.5k miles, 90 near me for 67k which isn't far from the 65k used 110. I don't need the extra size of the 110, just happened to be what they had there. Now the 110 i looked at was a first edition, while the 90 is an SE. I guess I need to learn about what a first edition brings that I may be missing in an SE.
Others on this board have had better luck but I'm just telling you what happened with me. If I had it to do over again I would try to get the 6 cyl and I would definitely make sure that I picked a trim level with fully electric seats. I had an extremely annoying problem with the partially manual seats where they got to the point where they would click with every weight transfer in stop and go situations.. The dealer wouldn't fix that, couldn't figure it out and I would've had to escalate it to JLR corporate to have that ripped and replaced if I'd kept it.I actually did test drive a new first edition 90 and also a new p300 110 before ordering my 90 p300 and thought the p300 engine was very nice on the test drive, so much so that I didn't hesitate to order one in the 90. The first edition 90 was very cool but I wasn't big on the jump seat that comes in that edition. The other thing I would pass along is the 90 is a major pita if you have anyone who needs to get into the back seat on a regular basis. At the time I was picking up both of my 6ft tall sons on weekends and the youngest always had to get into the back, he of all things started going through a spell where he was limping and at that time I really regretted not getting a 110, but if you don't have anyone getting back there the 90 is fine.
If you're coming out of a Mercedes I'd even check out the F-Pace. They gave me one as a loaner and I'd have probably done an even trade if they'd offered it to me. lol Sadly I think JLR is sticking to their all electric plans for the Jags so this little bit of a dream I have of ordering a new F-Pace with an ICE engine in it, my time is running out on that. No honestly I can't complain, I traded my 22 Defender for 22 Passport Trailsport and frankly as a daily driver car I'm extremely satisfied with the choice that I made. It's a keeper IMO.
