Buying a 2020 First Edition out of Warranty
I think the first edition had the 6 cyl, which now in retrospect I would favor honestly. I custom ordered a 90 with the p300 (4 cyl) and I had some low speed stalling issues with it that they could not figure out. It wasn't a total dealbreaker because it only happened like once every month and a half or two, but it did sour the experience of paying for a 60k new car that stalls.
Others on this board have had better luck but I'm just telling you what happened with me. If I had it to do over again I would try to get the 6 cyl and I would definitely make sure that I picked a trim level with fully electric seats. I had an extremely annoying problem with the partially manual seats where they got to the point where they would click with every weight transfer in stop and go situations.. The dealer wouldn't fix that, couldn't figure it out and I would've had to escalate it to JLR corporate to have that ripped and replaced if I'd kept it.
I actually did test drive a new first edition 90 and also a new p300 110 before ordering my 90 p300 and thought the p300 engine was very nice on the test drive, so much so that I didn't hesitate to order one in the 90. The first edition 90 was very cool but I wasn't big on the jump seat that comes in that edition. The other thing I would pass along is the 90 is a major pita if you have anyone who needs to get into the back seat on a regular basis. At the time I was picking up both of my 6ft tall sons on weekends and the youngest always had to get into the back, he of all things started going through a spell where he was limping and at that time I really regretted not getting a 110, but if you don't have anyone getting back there the 90 is fine.

That alternator/generator WILL fail.
More coolant pipes to cool it.
So far steering lockups attributed to P400, at least nobody said anything about P300.
But P400 is more pleasant to drive.

I think he's just referring to the posts you see here and not minable statistics.
Personally I've got a P300 and am on month 7 of ownership and a daily driver, and it's never seen the dealership since I drove off on day 1. And I regularly tow boats with it.
But everyone has a different experience. I'd lean towards a newer version rather than a new product launch. There are a few less accessories as standard on a newer one, but they also have really ironed out the troubles of the early versions.

Of course i'm referring to local post statistic, maybe a bit from other forums too, but it is still limited. However, common problems will manifest themselves more frequently here.

FWIW, I’ve had my MY22 X-Dynamic SE 110 since November’21 and it has not seen the dealer since the day I picked it up. As I write this, I am preparing to take it to the dealer for the first time to address a vehicle software update involving the NFSM, or near field sensing module, which in my opinion is very minor, and to have them replace the battery, as others have reported. I’m not too concerned, as batteries are recommended to be replaced every 3-5 years anyway, but there are wild variations in this, as I owned a Volvo that had a battery go 14 years. Go figure. These Defenders have a huge power load, with all the electronic wizardry, but it’s a gremlin I can live with since the vehicle has exceeded my expectations in every department. And I agree with the other posters in suggesting the 110 over the 90. If the back seats are used infrequently, it won’t matter much, but with kids who will be growing before your eyes, climbing into the back seat will become a burden. When I first started shopping the Defender, I took one look at the maneuvering it would take to get into the back and quickly changed my mind. But, to each his own.
