Default Carrying 4 bicycles

Hey everyone,

I'm in the final stages of ordering a Defender 110... and wondering if anyone has found a way to carry 4 bicycles on the back? I cannot carry any on the roof since we move around with a cargo box (we're moving around nomadically in Italy). I've done a lot of research online but I'm only finding carriers that take 2 bicycles.

Any tips would be helpful

I have a Thule T2 Pro XT for those occasions when I need to carry 4 bikes and the 1UP rack isn't enough. It's a bit of a monster (~ 80 lbs) but it works well.

I have the Thule as well and like how it can be used as a four back rack or shortened for a two bike rack when the 4 isnt needed.

Personally I think it is complete overkill as a 2-bike rack. The 1UP rack is better in almost every way.

I totally agree with you but would rather just shorten it than buy a new rack

That looks awesome! Thank you

Can you still open the back door with the bicycle mounted? If not how do you work around it?

You can't really open the door with bikes mounted on the back of the car. You can slightly if you drop the rack down but the best thing to do is to get a swing away. I got this Saris for $350 and love it so far.

One other thing, because of the rear tire on the door depending on the rack you cant collapse it up without an extender. I wanted to be able to access the back when camping etc so I went with the swing away which allowed access to the back and acted as an extender to allow for clearance of the tire when folding the rack up.

Hope this helps.

Road or mountain? If mountain and looking for a large number of bikes, consider a North Shore style rack which holds them vertically. Would still need a hitch extender or pivot.
