As for why not a BMW, etc...I came from a BMW. I love them. But I fell in love with the Defender as soon as I test drove it. Great on road driving experience and everytime you get in it you feel like you could be going on an adventure (and if you do, the floors are rubber and it will certainly get you there and back). And, I recently had my first kid and I hope he asks to go on adventures.
Not sure why people assume the BMW is better for on road driving, we have a 20 X5 and a 23 110, Defender is far more enjoyable drive for me and the electronics are far more reliable on the LR - I never thought I would say that!
I may not go off road but I will tow, again the X5 is only rated to 7,000lbs vs 8,200 for the 110.
Oh yes it's carpathian grey, why would that be an issue, we all choose our preferred colors.
Discoveries were women's vehicles here in the US. The Discovery II, which was imported in much greater numbers, was especially a woman's car and I still see more women driving them than men, but at this point I'm sure a lot of them have given up on them and more are being salvaged by men willing to endure the grief they cause. FWIW, I have a '98 Discovery 1. I bought it from a shop that took it off the hands of a man whose wife ordered him to sell it. The shop did the headgasket job before I came along. The original owner was a yuppie woman on the San Francisco Peninsula. I've given it a life more proper to its breeding.

Drove mine from 2003 until I bought my Defender. Still have it, it's basically a family member. And not worth enough to even try to sell, lol. Hanging onto it until I can put some time/money into it for some restoration.
I agree with tgibrit about the color thing, not sure why black is an issue at all. My dealer said they mostly sell white or black. As for men vs women driving them, who cares? I'm a guy and mine will be on pavement 100% of its life, and I think people off-roading in these are a very small percentage of buyers. This was such a weird post, almost feel like he was trolling. Btw Pangea Green might be the girliest color of them all, have only seen women in those .

Here's my D90 and yeah its black. Yes. I drop my son at school and then I go ride trails. Maybe we should just be happy whoever appreciates the truck or likes what ever color. All it does is make Land Rover invest more in the brand and make them better...even if women drive them to the mall. Frankly this thread is dumb.

Ouch! Don't be offended if you or your wife own a black defender, that's your choice. There is clearly a market for it.
My post was merely an observation on the demographic that this vehicle is appealing to 3+ years after release, and I was simply interested if this is widespread or just a local observation.
As JLR's highest selling vehicle they've done a good job in maximising the appeal of the Defender but I wonder at what cost to the sales of the RRS?
Almost sounds as if the OP wished he bought a Grenadier?
Had seriously considered it...I was on the pre-order list. Whenever a Gen2 comes out, I will look at it again. Depends on how reliable my modified MY21 110 will be after 100,000 kms. As the Defender range evolves to suit the majority of buyers, I don't think I will be able to spec the options to compete on price or capability with a Grenadier or Patrol off-road. Right now, it's been reliable and I love it. But I loved my Disco as well, so fingers crossed it lasts!! This is not my first Land Rover.
