Was smelling coolant for a few weeks on my 2022 110 P300 S (currently at 37,000 miles). I wash my 110 a lot and never noticed any coolant on the ground or under the hood. I had it in for a oil change and asked them to do a pressure test, they said "no leaks or loss of pressure." They did add a coolant UV dye and didn't see it leaking (green fluid in the pictures below the dye is UV light reactive). I suspect they didn't check the aux radiator. However, the aux radiator is only used when the vehicle get hot and the aux coolant pump is activated,

I did a 3,700 mile trip from FL to NY and back to NY and the coolant smell was strong especially from the driver's side when I arrived home. I think because of the heat in FL (over 90 every day) and the time it was running (over a 20 hour drive) it started to leak more, so I took off the driver's side front tire and the fender liner and found the source. The aux radiator was leaking from a few fins, not the hose fittings, the coolant level in the reservoir tank never really dropped. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the driver's side aux radiator under warrantee.

 

Great sleuthing! You should ask the Service Writer how much you should get paid for warranty triage / diagnosis... With that kind of staining, it's doubtful that they pulled the felt.

 

LOL, yes I will ask. I like turning my own wrenches, but if it's under warrantee they can pay for it, the part is over $400. Typically I follow "I am the warrantee" concept.

I added a smidge of coolant the other day after a long drive and a weekend with some mild trails. Probably the third or fourth time in almost two years. It's losing it somewhere albeit slowly and only intermittently.

I was thinking that the aux radiators may not get fully filled at factory and over time get burped when the coolant goes in over time get filled with a resultant drop in level. Probably a nonsense idea.

Now seeing this leak from you and others who have posted the exact same issue (leak from auxiliary radiator fins) I think it's time I took a look myself. Thanks for sharing the instructions on the removal of the wheel liners on FB. Seems straight forward enough for even me to do.

I wonder are the fins getting damaged by rock strikes

 

Nice find! I had a weird low coolant warning once, and couldn't find or see any leaks. topped off and it hasnt come back but makes me worried.

Thank you for the update. I have had similar issue for over 2 years now. I've brought it to LR attention multiple times with the service team saying, everything it fine. Most recently they tried selling me the concept that the P300 engine tends to need coolant on regular basis and next time I had issues to bring it in to show them how I fill up the tank.

So help me understand the auxillary radiators and temp thing. Under which conditions would i see a leak at the aux coolers? My p400 has twice lost coolant past the low mark. Both occasions it was pressure tested and passed. The tech says coolant consumption is normal. Over a gallon however is far from normal in my opinion

 

I have a snoozeville Honda and had a similarly boring MDX before the Defender. Never added a drop of coolant to either. Junkers aside, loss of any coolant is not typical in my car owning experience.

My recent oil analysis showed no coolant in the oil.

I'd like to know where normal coolant losses come from in a new low mileage engine. I'm genuinely curious.
