related question: wife took her '22 defender due to a software update getting corrupted and it locked up her infotainment screen. while there it was decided to do an oil change, and resulted in a $500+ bill with an additional $80 for an ethanol kit. Is this normal? And are oil changes on these things something I can't do myself at home? Not that I expect a "$30 Jiffy Lube special" but was startled the invoice.
These are BMW-sourced engines tuned to LR’s Ingenium specs, this isn’t the 70’s anymore where an oil change is needed every 3k miles. If you’ve been following the schedule, great. A few hundred bucks for an oil change ain’t bad if spread out like that.
No idea what an ethanol kit is though.

2nd Gen Defender (2020-2023.5MY) Maintenance Schedule for regular oil changes under most conditions is every 21k miles or 2 years (which ever comes first) for the P300 and P400. If you’re changing oil every 5-10k miles, it’s a waste of oil and money in my opinion. Read the owner’s manual.

Here's that section of the invoice - the "ethanol kit" was explained to me as some sort of "cleaner" (?) and honestly I was having such a hard time processing the $500 for the oil change I didn't really listen to that well enough to honestly judge it.
I talked to my sales contact that I've know for 15+ years and he admitted it was expensive, but on par with other dealers. he advised that if I do future changes to make sure I "keep receipts" so that if there are any warranty issues later - Land Rover will want documentation that I performed the work. (I wonder if that raises questions about doing the work myself?)

First they are charging for 10l of oil. The P300 takes 7l, the P400 takes 8.8l and and the v8 takes 8l. Then the labor charge for the oil change is included in the parts total "Perf oil service" for $60 which is about right for the 15-20 minutes it takes.
So where the other hour of labor at $252 comes from is anyone's guess.
Please publicize which dealer this was so we can avoid them

No way I'd EVER go that long between oil services. Most of these long intervals proposed by the manufactures are for marketing purposes. In the Porsche and Audi communities there have been numerous examples of failures related to following oil service recommendations. The IMS issue with the M96 engine one example. Materially higher failure rates in cars that followed the suggested oil service intervals.

but your opinion was people would be “wasting their money and oil” changing earlier than manufacturer recommended….

You said you don’t keep cars long, I typically haven’t either (this will be the first exception if all goes well) and have stuck to recommended service intervals, so I totally get it. But if anyone plans to keep this car for more than 4 years, imo it would be best to increase your odds of a favorable outcome.
