First time poster, short time lurker. I am very close to pulling the trigger on a 2022 Defender 90 (X-Dynamic SE in black) and wondering if its a practical choice with a wife and 3 year old. I live in NYC so 90 seems easier to deal with vs the 110 re. parking. We will mainly use it on the weekends for trips to the Catskills (mountains) and headed to beach. Thanks in advance!

 

Fwiw I regretted the 90. I had plans to use the backseat with my work laptop when I'm on call 24/7 so if I got a call while on the road I was planning to use the click and work with the hotspot. The problem is if you're alone, try getting back there and getting the seat back into place upright and slid back into position. Very awkward, especially with the manual seats fore and aft like I have, so the click-and-work is still in the box, didn't use it once because of that. If you have the full electric seats I guess ? then maybe it's still do-able with a 90 but i dunno. The other problems were with my sons, my oldest put on a lot of weight and had a hard time squeezing into there, he's about 6'1 230. The good thing is once you're back there it's roomy but you're almost like crawling through a porthole to get in there. My other son developed a hip problem (not from the vehicle) but when he started having problems with his hip he was confined to the front seat and my oldest had to keep squeezing into and out of the back. With a little one I honestly would not recommend it personally. I know what you're saying for parking etc, I get it there are pros too but on balance you're still better off with the 110 (IMO). I even think it holds its value a bit better. With either 90 or 110 I think you'll benefit from the air suspension, the access height will be about an inch lower. Side-steps aren't a bad idea either.

 

my buddy has a 90 and one child. He says it’s fine for the family.

but i tried getting into the back seat and it’s a pain. Basically a coupe of you think about.

everyone will be much more comfy in a 110

 

You would have to be pretty dedicated to the looks of the 90 to put up with the inconvenience of messing with putting a young child in the back. It would be a royal PITA. The seat motor takes ages to power forward to allow access, then ages to motor back into position. Forget that. Just get a 110 and get one of those spare tire delete plates and you are within a whisker of the length the 90. Or get a smaller car for the city perhaps. It would actually work better if the kid were a little older and agile enough to clamber back there himself and secure himself in the seat, to if he was old enough not to need a seat. The whole aspect of messing with loading that kid back there every time would be a deal breaker for me.

 

The two biggest things are my 2.5 year old can't do up his own car seat and the 90 doesn't have any storage room for toddler stuff. If this is a 3rd vehicle and you don't use it often, it's fine but otherwise you're better off with a 110.

 

I had a ‘22 90 S, Male 25, 6’2”, single with no kids (sounds like I’m on a dating app); anyways I often tested sitting in the back. There’s loads of room back there, it’s not a problem at all. The problem is getting in the back, which is very awkward. For a kid it should be simple though. I don’t think it would be a problem at all. The issue is, with the back seats up, there is next to no room for cargo space. Which for me wasn’t a problem, all I ever got was groceries.

 

Hi! I have two kids and so far one dog. A lot of space in back seats, it’s absolutely comfortable for me, wife and kids. The only limitation is the size of the trunk. It’s not ok for babycar.

 

That's the thing here, the kid is not old enough to be self-sufficient to climb back there quickly and do up his own seat, and won't be for several more years. He has a toddler. The D90 is just a terrible package for parents of young children.

 

You will appreciate the extra side door on a 110 when you try to strap that child in the car seat. Don't forget you may need to bring along a pack & play, that pop-up shade tent, booster seat for meals and more. And if you have any plans to add a sibling for your 3 year old that 110 will be a must.

 

Pack n Play, car seat, stroller, sunshade, high chair, 17 meals, diaper bag, toys....The list is endless when it comes to crotch fruit these days. Whatever happened to the days when your parents opened the car door, you clambered up and that was that? You had the shirt on your back and you could play with old french fries you found. This mentality is one of the big reasons I never had kids. I'm telling you, in my mid-30s I became fixated on these empty-looking shells of men I saw walking around parking lots toting 500 pounds of gear while their wife tells them to hurry up while she is carrying a 12 pound baby. They just looked miserable.
