Default Defender - Beach and Sand Driving - OBX

Hello - I have a 130 with 22 inch wheels and taking the SUV down to the OBX this year. Will be driving on the beach near Corolla (been doing this for 14 years).

Does anyone air down the 22 inch wheels and how much ? Just worried about sidewalls. Also thinking about picking up 20 inch wheels. Thoughts, pictures etc are welcome please

Those short sidewalls cause particular problems when off-roading on stony terrain when aired down due to pinching and possible tearing of the sidewall while rolling over rocks. However on sand, I don't think you'll face that issue. And although the short sidewall may be stressed after airing down, it's not like you'll be driving 100s of miles at high speed. 20" wheels seems like a pretty expensive solution for a few hours on the beach. If you do decide to get a 2nd set of smaller wheels for off-roading, why not get 18" which will greatly open up your options for off-road adventures.

When taking our LR4's on the beach, I would have to air down, usually after parking on an incline with the tailgate facing the water. When attempting to leave, I would feel it start to sink rather than move forward. I was in a similar place with the Defender. Engaged low traction launch and easily got going. The low traction launch is amazing and no need to air down.

However, I'm running 20" wheels so I could air down if necessary. Airing down 22's could be problematic.
