Thinking about it, l am not sure most buyers of the current Defender will be interested in whether it's called a Land Rover Defender or JLR Defender
Most die hard fans who care about this sort of thing, own the old model, which will always be a Land Rover Defender.
Every one l've met who owns the new model, refers to it as a "Defender" and not a "Land Rover Defender"
Whereas people l know with the old version, tend to refer to it as their "Land Rover"

JLR would be mad to lose the "Land Rover" brand name, or sell it off so it suffers the same fate as MG.
Here is great piece on "Grizzly Torque". a 57 Series I that crossed the globe. Gotta love those jerry cans....

Anyone remember the Acura Legend?
Honda did just the opposite with the "Legend" brand. They had conducted studies and found the "Legend" nameplate had a higher recognition than the "Acura" brand did....So they eliminated the Legend nameplate. Proved to work out well for them....Bet ya gotta think real hard as to what they rebadged the big sedan as? I think it was the RL?

That said I have no problem with 'sub brands.' There are multiple broncos. Rumors of a 4 door EV Mustang (Sedan not crossover thingy). Chevy is talking about a Corvette SUV for a while now. But Chevy and Ford will never go anywhere. Theres too much cache in the brand name, and frankly There is with Land rover as well. So I'm not sure why they chose to do this.
The results in practice I dont think anyone gave a **** and were gonna buy them anyway. But over time Acura has as a brand gone down hill in terms of recognition and prestige. The RL and the RLX that came after it were both completely anonymous and largely forgotten/never sold well after the Legend name was killed.
While I don't agree with this brand move either (LR dropped in favor of these three), I have to say the opposite didn't work as well.
I say give cars a brand, and give each a real name. That builds a brand in and of itself over time. There is a reason why ford bought back the 'bronco' and chevy keeps recycling things like Malibu/Blazer, etc. Embrace the model name's own lineage, but that doesn't mean the brand should step aside

Why not do the corporate rebranding properly
Why call them "cars" at all. How about re branding the entire range as "Personal Mobility Solutions"
Although it wouldn't fit on the bonnet/hood. "Defender" letters only just fit.
You'd have to shorten it to P M S
Land Rover P M S
That would work
