Diagnostic Options New Defender
Hi everyone,
is there any cheap code reader that works with the new defender ?(just to read the the codes, not reprogram the car or activate stuff) I know that the Gap IID ist the gold standard here, - and I'll probably get one later - but for now I would like something to just scan the trouble codes. (I have an Autel AP200 which worked fine with my Jaguar XF, but it doesn't show anything when plugged into the Defender)

The problem with OBD code readers is that they work on an open standard - OBD2 (EOBD in the EU) and only read data on this standard. This was created so that emissions testing agencies would have the ability to look at vehicles and see if something is wrong. This also means that the only vehicle systems these readers are generally able to read are emissions related - the motor and, if so equipped, the automatic transmission. Because the standard is open and no reverse engineering is required, these code readers can be purchased for as little as $20 online - in contrast to something like the IIDTool which requires a LOT of work. And because they (generally) only read motor and auto trans codes all other systems are outside of the capabilities these readers provide. And on an L663 Defender that's 2 of roughly 60+ systems...
There are other systems that work with Land Rovers, but the more capable ones are 1/2 to 2/3 the price of an IIDTool and still do not provide close to the equivalent level of functionality. And IMO just not worth the savings. The one exception was the iCarsoft i930 which used to be available for under $100 and could communicate with the majority of ECUs on many LR's. Unfortunately from all I could find it doesn't seem to work on the L663.
And this is just my opinion. As many here will know, I am not impartial

@Dogpilot: Thanks for the tip with VEEPEAK. It works better on the Defender than my old Autel code reader. As a bonus it also works with my wife's car -
@stevemfr: Thanks for your explanations. Longterm I see no alternative to getting GAP tool. However at this point G4 is not yet available at reselers in Germany. (Not keen on buying on from abroad because in case of a return or warranty issue I have to sort out the whole custom thing myself). Add to that, there is not much I want to activate on my Defender and I have a '24 Defender with a 5 years warranty so I feel I can wait a bit before getting a G4.
