Default Software Update Installation

I'm new to this forum, having recently bought a '23 Defender 110 V8. Love it so far, but so much to learn.

I'm going to start off by asking what I am doing wrong trying to install a downloaded factory software update. I've followed the instruction - lock the vehicle (to activate alarm) and tell it to install now. Nothing happens - the software does not install.

Will someone please give me a detailed step-by-step sequence of how I'm supposed to do the software update? TIA.

Welcome def_v8
Lots of good info on this topic so keep reading through every page on this forum. You will learn a ton from this group. My issue was a week battery and until I bought a proper AGM maintenance charger (13.2v vs 12.v flooded) and left it on overnight i had not luck on getting the updates.

Here is a good over view from chpsk8. Thanks chpsk8.

"I think there's some rules that have to be followed in order to get the updates."

Doors locked
Alarmed
Windows up (for real, all the way up with no accessories blocking them)
In-Control App connected and working/functioning with the vehicle (doesn't have to be on, but needs to be an active account and able to lock/unlock the vehicle)
WIFI connected (others have said this is needed, my updates have always alerted me in the middle of a commute, so YMMV)
Battery topped off (this seems to be a big one. Leave it on a charger overnight and make sure the battery can be fully charged)

If I was going to try anything I would put the car in my garage, make sure the wifi is connected, connect it to a battery charger, lock and set the alarm, and then leave it over the weekend and see what happens.

FWIW my dealer said they can't force an update as well, and they weren't interested in telling me what version I was stuck on when I first bought it.

Thanks very much for this. Maybe what I'm missing is how to turn the alarm on. From reading the owner's manual on the iPhone app, I was under the impression that locking the vehicle sets the alarm. Is there something else I need to do?

You need to push the lock button twice. You will hear an audible Beep/chirp. Windows and doors need to be shut and rolled up.

Quick follow-up. I ended up having to call the JLR customer assistance line because their website would not let me complete registering my Incontrol account. Turns out the dealership entered a misspelled email address. The customer service rep was very helpful and patient and got everything sorted. We got the account established, confirmed my Remote phone app was working properly, and then following the call, my updating of the vehicle's software was very easy. So all is good; thanks for the help here.
