Yeah, they were selling so well before, this will surely solve JLR’s sales problems. Solid axle, body-on-frame diesels and gassers is totally the way forward.

(And for the record, I’ve been on the Grenadier ordering list for a year now. But if there’s one thing you can do that’s GUARANTEED to sink your automotive business, it’s only offer vehicles that appeal mightily to me. )

Investors get screwed, he gets richer. JLR has a great product in the Defender and a few of its other models, and needs proper management to prosper.
What happened to boring company?

BMW did do a pretty good job last time too. I would love a UK related owner for LR, but a German one would be my second choice.

It’s interesting how much people love small crossovers, and many desire a trail ready crossover, yet won’t buy small trail ready crossovers from LR… with that said the Evoque and RR Sport need to go. Defender clearly must stay which isn’t an issue for BMW, but the X7 is supposed to be their RR slayer.

The Discovery was the first vehicle I ever loved and I would love to see it stay maybe as a premium option to replace the RR Sport; they probably killed it when they made the Defender so versatile unless it moves upmarket. I think the Disco Sport needs a redesign but to kill all the small crossovers would be a mistake. I like the Velar and I think it might make sense to keep one road focused SUV; maybe it sells better with less clutter on the lots, but it should considered for the chopping block too.

TLDR: Defender and RR obviously stay, maybe keep Disco Sport and Disco, Evoque and RR Sport should go, Velar is a toss up.

Where I live, the Discovery 5 actually competes with the X7 as a 3-row family hauler. (6 cylinder X7's not the M50i version) In fact, the Discovery 5 may even be more popular than the X7 for families that use the nearby drive-on beach. Of course that may change with the 3-row 130 now available.

Interesting point - I think Land Rover can simplify offerings the RR and RRS could crush it if they can get them out there along with the Defender

2022 production:

? New Range Rover (not listed for '22 / 88k units expected for '23)
60,000 Defender
40,000 RRE
36,000 RRS
30,000 Velar
20,000 Disco Sport
5,000 Disco

"client order book now at 205,000 units; our three most profitable models, the New Range Rover, New Range Rover Sport and Defender account for over 70% of the order book"

Supply constraints cloud the real numbers for the Disco but it doesn't seem to compete with anything.

Personally, they're missing a real upmarket high-volume-potential Bronco/Jeep competitor with a removable top and a forum that doesn't spend half of their posts talking about how to squeeze off-road tires on their hump-caliper luxo-box. Mistakes were made.

Controversial but, that should have been the Defender reboot and what we're driving should be the Disco. The only thing "Defender" about our current model is the back end styling.

Hey!. I resemble that remark.

30%. 35% max, of my posts are grumbles about the stupid brake caliper design and stupid wheel options that castrate the vehicle's off-road capabilities.

Easy solution... sell Land Rover to Ineos.

Focus on a simplified model range of:

Land Rover
Discovery Sport (Rebrand as Discovery on the D Sport platform and refresh into the entry level, rugged, offroader)
Defender (wildly successful, keep doing what you're doing with it, no need for the older larger discovery)
Grenadier (spirt of the old defender)

Range Rover
Evoque
RR Sport
Range Rover

Ineos picks up all the heritage and name to go with the Grenadier (now named Land Rover Grenadier), additional factories, design. Leverage Ineos F1 partnership with Mercedes Benz for necessary electrification expertise and engines where necessary. Ineos is also still partnered with MB because the Grenadier factory still manufactures smart cars for MB.

Jim Ratcliffe could easily buy LR (JLR if he wants it) without breaking the bank. I wonder if he’s considered it, would be a pretty tidy fit.
