Default Is a drain hole necessary on spare tire cover?

I am thinking about getting a spare tire cover for my defender from Amazon. But I have a question, how easy does the tire cover to trap water? And is it necessary to get a tire cover with a drain hole? My area rains a lot. Thanks!

Yes, it is. I paid $400 w/ shipping or an Eiger Grey one from a very reputable supplier in UK ... and no drain hole, and it fills up with water in the PNW here. They sent me a new one with the drain hole (basically a grommet in the bottom of it.

I used to be more "crafty" in my younger days and did some leather work/carving. To put a grommet on something is SUPER easy. Just go to your nearest craft store and they will have a LOT of them and a tool to set them. Punch a hole, put one of these where you want it, call it done.

Here's even a link:

. Practice on an old pair of jeans (bedazzle some!) or a folded t-shirt (a little thicker) and you will be a pro in about 3 tries. Seriously - you really can't mess this up. And, it's cheaper than shipping one back.

Hmm I'll have to check mine. I've never given it a thought to be honest. The stock cover fits so tightly I'm surprised water would get very far but I'll take a look. (Edit) no water with the stock one. I mean the actual wheel does have some moisture on it, from carwashes mostly (in my case) but nothing of concern IMO. I can't speak for the aftermarket cover options.
