Default Extended warranty?

When I bought my defender tonight, the finance guy offered an extended warranty through his dealer group for 7k. He said he didn’t see an option in the system to offer a LR manufacturer warranty.

Is this normal? I hesitate to buy anything other than manufacturer paper so if it’s not offered I need to reconsider. Is there a better resource for extended warranty’s on new defenders?

I’d be curious about this too. Is there a fav extended warranty provider? And at what point do you need to purchase it say if you bought your new car today…

my $0.02. skip the extended warranty, especially at the time of purchase. if you end up keeping the car beyond the original warranty and decide you want added protection, you can always buy an extended warranty later. my experience with extended warranties is they're usually just money makers for whoever sells them to you. of course, your mileage may vary. good luck.

My dealer said the same thing. They don't offer an extended warranty through Land Rover. There was a company though the dealer that worked at JLR dealerships nationwide but it's not "factory".

Interesting, it seems dealers want you to buy their dealership warranty. My selling dealer didn’t say that LR doesn’t have one, the guy filling in for the normal finance guy said he couldn’t “see” a LR warranty in their system.

I’ll call around and see what other LR dealers say. On the Toyota and Ford forums, there’s always dealers who will sell you the manufacturer warranties and maintenance plans at a significant discount. Perhaps there’s a LR dealer who will do the same.

I would prefer to keep the defender for 7 years and am prepared to pre pay at some point in the near future for LR coverage. Usually, the sooner you buy it, the lower the cost.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. I had my last car for 17 years and I would like this one to do 15 if possible. My dealer did have a maintenance plan but the guy said it's kind of a rip off so he would see it to me but he doesn't recommend it.

They push their dealer warranties because they can make more money on the back end on them. But they are typically cheaper. 7k for a dealer warranty though seems crazy. I paid I wanna say around 6-7k for my 7yr 100k JLR warranty. It is definitely available. they just don't wanna sell it for whatever reason.

My dealer pushed their 'aftermarket' warranty hard. Swore it was dealer backed, every bit as good etc. I looked up reviews and of course you only see the bad online, but I was really struggling with half price for a dealer one nearly 7k for the JLR. In the end I came to the conclusion that any amount of money for a warranty that will constantly be denied/hard to work with isn't worth anything. I may have flushed 3500 or so down the drain I dont know, but I have better peace of mind with the JLR.

Of course, that’s always been my experience when at any dealer. However, after calling around, some LR dealers are saying “LR doesn’t offer an extended warranty”. My selling dealer sales manager said LR still does, but they don’t generally offer them, and offered to send me some pricing.

We’ll see where this goes but if they are available, there’s got to be a LR dealer willing to sell the LR warranty at a reasonable price to members of this forum.

I was quoted $3700 for a three year/36k mile ASC extended warranty by my dealer, and to add an extra year and 12k miles was only an additional $100. My dealer doesn't even offer the JLR factory extended warranty because quite frankly, it sucks and its more expensive. The ASC warranty is very similar to a factory warranty. I plan on buying it shortly before my factory warranty expires in a year.

I bought a 10 year warranty w the defender last year for 10K. It sounds like a lot, but I'm factoring in inflation on parts and particularly labor, and I think it's worth the bet since I'd like to keep this one 10 years. Been through a couple vehicles before the defender, and this one hits all the marks for retirement lifestyle and it's mainly the woman's car though I really like driving it. My vehicles are a Ram truck and an older CJ. The defender is a great 1000-mile traveler carrying two dogs (springers). With all the noise about electronics and headlights, it was worth it to me to get the warranty. I got it in writing two different ways that the headlight assemblies are covered. I just came out of a range rover sport and before that a Mercedes SUV. The RR-S had an extended warranty bought through the dealer too. I had one claim covered by the extended warranty before I got the defender, and because it's on JLR paper, it was a hassle free repair all handled by the dealership. I think you want that extended warranty on JLR paper. I expect to keep this vehicle at least ten years, but probably not much after that. After a year with the car, I couldn't be happier with the purchase.
