Extended Warranty - thoughts?
I think there are different levels of comfort affording a Land Rover. I’ll have mine paid off long before the warranty expires, but I also don’t have a problem paying for repairs if they are needed. Some will correct me and say when…. However, I know the interwebz magnify the negative of things, especially automotive horror stories and overshadow the many more people who have little to no issues with their vehicles. I’ve read plenty of stories about folks who say that their defenders have given them 150k trouble free miles over more than 4 years. These folks don’t generally run to the interwebz to report their satisfaction with their LR’s. While there’s always a risk, i think a 24, post pandemic/chip shortage Defender should have good reliability. I have 601 trouble free miles so far. lol. I would have bought a warranty only if to have a warm feeling about keeping the LR 6 years, but they wanted 7500 for their dealership group warranty. I just smiled and declined. I paid half that for my R8s warranty.
Heading out to Utah for a backpacking/offroading trip in a couple weeks, where I will cross the 40,000-mile mark. I realize that it could all go to hell and start breaking right and left at any moment, but I have been amazed at not having a single issue so far, 2.5 years and 36,000 miles in. Not what I expected. I bought it in spite of LR’s reputation.
I’ll give you another one. I ordered a 2022 110 P400 in late-Feb 2021, right before they started becoming super hard to get. It was built in early May. I just got back from a trip where I crossed the 36,000-mile threshold. I took a rock chip to the windshield and have an appointment to have it replaced this week. That will be my second trip back to the dealership; the first was also to replace a windshield, broken when a branch landed on it in a storm. That’s it. I’ve done the oil changes myself, taken it to an indy for a full check/oil change once, and to do the winch and rear caliper swap for 18s.

Yea I think you and I ordered during a similar timeframe, I remember they went from 2020s on the lot to taking 2022 orders really quickly. 2021 model year seemed almost non-existent. I'm glad to hear you've had good luck. I'd like to think I might be back someday for an F-Pace even if my one JLR experience did nothing but underscore all of the internet lore and the bottom ranking they get on quality surveys. In terms of daily driving I can't recall anything more embarrassing than when this things engine cut out and stranded me in a 30mph zone then wouldn't restart for about 15 minutes, I'm sitting on the shoulder with hazards on in a 65k new Defender in an area where half the population drives an Equinox rubbernecking at me. What a joke.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. However, I have friends on another forum with new Toyota Tundra’s with blown engines on the side of the road. I think this current generation of vehicles assembled during the pandemic all suffer from issues. While my 23 tundra was parked for 2.5 months waiting for parts for a recall so it didn’t spontaneously catch on fire, I was handed a new 24 Prius. The Prius infotainment screen rebooted itself every 20 seconds while it was on.
I think the playing field has been leveled between manufacturers.

I live within reasonable distance from three dealers and none of them will take third-party warranties anymore. So, you have to pay for the repair and then go get the reimbursement, kind of like out-of-network medical care. I selected the version that’ll go to 7 years/75K, which is more than I’ll need for the next three years. I’ll let you know in 36 months if it was worth it but given the large repairs I’ve needed under the factory warranty (now expired) it helps me sleep at night and I’m pretty confident I’ll get close to breaking even in the end. The dealer I like will also continue to let me use loaners when they have my car, not an insignificant consideration given I was without my car for weeks when they replaced the rear differential. Good luck!
JLR doesn't have an official in-house extended warranty you can buy. The one he is talking about is a Land Rover branded warranty administered through Safeguard, and can be bought at any JLR dealer. My dealer offers it, but they recommend that customers buy the ASC factory-type warranty that they sell because it is cheaper and offers better coverage than the LR-branded Safeguard warranty. ASC is around $5000 for a five-year, 100k mile extended warranty vs $6000 for the equivalent LR-branded Safeguard warranty. Of course, prices are usually negotiable. Plus the ASC has no deductible and all parts & labor is included. I haven't bought it yet - I will in six weeks when my warranty is about to expire. I'm friends with the finance manager at my JLR dealer and he gave me a great price on the ASC warranty - $3700 for the five-year, 100k and $4100 for the maximum eight-year 120k option. My dealer has been using ASC for a little over a year and so far they have not had a single problem trying to get something covered. At $5000, I would consider it, but at $3700, its a no-brainer.
