Default "Headlights Fault Detected" after new Headlamp install

Hey guys,

So first off, I replaced my passenger's headlight after having the day light running lights stop working. I bought a brand new one off Ebay for $500, and took about 20 minutes to replace it. Mechanic wanted $1200 to install even if I supplied the part, which is wild. But...maybe I'm thinking I did something wrong. The new headlamp works completely as if brand new, but shortly after having the car run I am getting a "Headlights Fault Detected" but everything is working just fine. Unplugged my battery for 30 minutes too and still pops up.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I think -not sure- that the new headlight needs to be coded to the car.

From ChatGPT:

  • Halogen headlights → No coding required. These are more basic and typically plug-and-play.
  • LED / Matrix LED headlights (most common on higher trims) → Yes, coding/initialization is usually required.
    • The car’s Body Control Module (BCM) and Headlight Control Module need to recognize the new unit.
    • Coding ensures that adaptive functions like auto-leveling, matrix beam control, cornering lights, and high-beam assist work properly.
    • Without coding, the light may turn on but advanced functions won’t work, or you may see a dashboard warning.
Land Rover dealerships and independent shops with JLR SDD/Pathfinder software can perform the coding.

not sure why I didnt think to ask Chat...thank you for this information, looks like I'll reach out to the mechanic - maybe thats why he quoted me $1200! Another shop quoted me $700 as well but is 90 minutes away from me.

Just was quoted $285 for the coding which they'll need the car all day.

It should not take all day to do the coding if they are familiar with the JLR software. An hour at most.

good to know - I asked if I could wait for it was done(they are roughly 90 minutes from my home) and they said they’d need it for the entire day. They are certified LR mechanics. I reached out to another shop that’s closer as well and waiting to hear back. In the meantime, this fault isn’t causing any trouble is it? I assume no….but assumptions have gotten me in trouble in the past lol

It should not cause any issues other than the message you get on your dash.

Well update - it appears it has fixed itself and the code has been gone all day today after a good 100 miles put on it. Might just be temporary though.

No coding needed.

it’s a straight swap. 20-30 minute job.
