Installed Lucky8's halo headlights
I was one of the lucky ones (joke) to not be able to spec a 2023 P300 110 Feb 2023 (delivered Aug 23) with the upgraded Halo lights. "First World Problem" bummed, then I started reading thread after thread about one or both of the halo's failing and owners having to wait months for a replacement. whew.. dodged that bullet.. Took delivery almost a year ago and it's been pretty amazing with no issues other than the occasional blank screen. However the standard lights always bugged me. never really bright enough. Saw some plug n play Halo lights on Lucky 8's website a couple months ago and after watching multiple YT videos on installing I finally pulled the trigger and ordered the set.
What I think the videos neglected to point out was that the center grill that needs to come off, which has the 3 tabs on each side, the bottom tab is actually connected to the plastic rectangle panel that is connected to the black plastic headlight surround that also has to come off. On the PowerfulUK videos, the panel under the headlight is not connected to the front grill. And these panels flex which made releasing the tab holding the front grill a challenge, but not impossible. once the pieces were painstakingly carefully detached I unhooked the headlight washer fluid hose, making note on how it was clamped, which has to be clamped back in the exact same way.
I noticed on PowerfulUK's video that he looked at both the pin sequences in the connector and compared the OEM standard LED with the OEM halo LED. All the pins were the same I believe except one pin was missing. Well.. These are not OEM halo LES's. In fact, these have a Chinese label on them. I photographed both connectors, the photo on top is OEM and the photo under it is from Lucky8. As you can see, the Lucky8 light only has 1 pin on one row and the OEM has 8 pins across 2 rows. I got quite nervous as the description for these lights gives the impression they are plug n play, without mention of losing any functionality. I was in too deep, I proceeded.
The headlights themselves are secured by just 3 bolts each. removal for both was under 5 minutes. I was getting real Terminator vibes, like when His eye got ripped out and stuff was hanging from it. Installing the halos was uneventful and quick.
Eager to see if everything worked and they indeed did.
Slowly and methodically I started putting the pieces back together. I really could not believe when i was done, and didn't scratch a panel or break a tab. The only thing not perfect was the black plastic housing that surround the headlights are secured to the frame by 2 sided sticky tape. some came off on the left side which made the piece stick out from the frame about 3/16's of an inch. as there is nothing there to adhere it. The right side retained the tape and stuck great. I'm not losing sleep over it.
The difference truly is night and day. I see so much now driving at night with these lights that "impressive" is an understatement. However, I did lose something with the install. I lost the Auto High Beam Assist function. Everything else seems to work fine, lights auto level at start up, turn signals and all that, but the low beams don't automatically switch to HI when oncoming cars pass and vice versa. I did like that function and while I wish this was disclosed in the description on the website, it's unclear to me if that would have swayed me into not buying, knowing now, exactly how good these things really put out the light. This was very much plug and play, no code stuff, just remove old and plug in new, I like that. I also street park this baby, had quite the number of walk on's expressing their astonishments, opinions and well wishes
