Did anyone order the onboard air compressor?
Most of the time I don't bother airing-down my LR4 tires when driving on the beach. But sometimes if I park on an uphill incline, when I attempt to leave the LR4 will sink into the soft sand rather than move forward which means I do need to air down. Then I take the 10 minute drive home on 20 psi tires and use my big air compressor to inflate the tires. Onboard air would be nice, but I have a few concerns:
- What is the run time? Enough to inflate all 4 tires? I have tried some small portable compressors and they either timeout when overheating or actually melt.
- How much space do you lose in the rear cargo area? It's already smaller than my LR4 cargo area.
Thank you in advance for your feedback.
I have the air compressor. I like it. You set the pressure on the dial and it will inflate or deflate to that pressure automatically. No fiddling with pressure gauges etc. I’m glad I have it and have used it a lot off-roading.
Hmmm...deflate too. That is enough reason to order it. Funny, with my Defender build at $87K, I was tempted by the new SQ7 at $90K. I just couldn't get past it having regular tires (not run flats) and no spare tire. So instead of a can of fix-a-flat, with the Defender I'll have a full size spare and an onboard compressor.
My local dealer is not yet released to order the on-board compressor, so I have moved over my Viair 300P portable compressor (ordered on Amazon) from my LR4 to the Defender. It works great !
It's a great option. Like Guapo says, you turn the **** to a preset PSI and it either inflates it or deflates it to that set PSI. The Land Rover air hose that comes with it also easily reaches all four tires.
It has fitting instructions and a part #, so I assume the air integrated compressor can be ordered and installed afterwards - it doesn't look that daunting of an install either for a DIYer.
