The Joy of Manual Downshifting
My wife and I drove US30 (The Lincoln Highway) from Gettysburg to Breezewood PA yesterday, up and over Big Mountain. There were a lot of tight 20MPH downhill curves that gave me an opportunity to practice using the manual downshift feature to use engine braking to compliment the brakes. It was very easy to shift up or down to modulate speed in "S" mode. We came away quite impressed.
Driving through the mountains requires to down and upshift.
You can anticipate in front to use engine breaking just by shift from D to S
( this will take some time for the gearbox to react depending on various conditions)
As soon as it automatically downshifts you can do manually shifts to go lower each time.
You need to practice this to get used to the behavior of the gearbox.
Shift back to D when going up . Need more shift back to S
So a lot of shifting between D and S by driving in the mountains.
Again this needs some practice.
