Have a 2020 LR Defender First Edition. It recently did an update and after that the left semi-circular running light and the 2 small side lights beside the headlight no longer work. Anyone else had this issue?

 

Seen this happen to quite a few of Defenders. Best bet is to get the dealer to cover it under warranty unless yours has expired, in which case you may try LR customer service and see if they would cover it under goodwill.

 

These are notorious for burning out. They have a chip in them that overheats and causes them to stop working. It is likely a coincidence that it happened after an update. You can buy a chip and tear the headlight apart to install, but will need a new headlight enclosure. You can also find a whole new headlight assembly on eBay for around $500. Dealer will charge between $3-4k for a new headlight installed. Had the same thing happen to my 2020. There is a long thread on here about it. Look up DRL failure. (daytime running lights)

 

Having both DRLs burnout at exactly the same time after an update would be one hell of a coincidence (though I've learned never to say never with JLR). Unless there was something in the update that made the DRLs burn out... Is it possible that they burned out one after another over the previous weeks/months and you just never noticed till now?

Regardless, the best way forward would be to contact your dealer. If they really are burned out, you can replace only the LED boards for considerably less than a new headlight. And you definitely do NOT need a new headlight housing (where did that advice come from?). You will need to either put the light in an oven to soften the glue that holds the lens in place or use a heat gun very judiciously (from the back side - heating the black plastic housing and not the headlight lens! Years ago I had a couple of guys on a P38 Range Rover forum accuse me of being full of sh.. because they had broken multiple glass headlight lenses heating them with a heat gun. I never thought anyone would be so silly as to point a heat gun at a glass lens. While the L663 lens is no longer glass, I'd not want to risk damaging it through direct heat application with a hot air gun).

 

Is the light source for the "hoop" the same source for the outer LED squares that also went out according to the OP? I was under the impression they were two separate things.

OP - did you perform a GAP tool update, or a software update?

 

I believe the OP only had one DRL burn out.

Agreed that you do not need a whole new housing, but in my experience the dealer is not going to take the headlight apart, they will only install a new one. I got a whole new headlight off eBay for just under $500 and now I have a spare to send in to an independent repair shop for a replacement chip install (quoted at $300) if it happens again. I have an aftermarket chip installed in the passenger's side and it is still going strong, although my replacement chip in the drivers side only lasted 3 months. I imagine that when the passengers side goes out I will do the same and then the fix will only be $300 per light going forward. Hell of a lot cheaper than the dealer, but also should not be happening in the first place.
