I bought one of those surplus for $300 back in 1992. Towed it with my old Series IIA. It was in great shape and still had the markings of the 107th Ohio National Guard, all on camo. They sold them when the old Jeep M151 mutt was phased out for the HMVEE. Made for 1/4 ton but I would haul twice that much in sand, manure, and such. The downside is that it had no tailgate which meant a lot of shoveling. I also had to replace the military black out tail lamps with standard 12V trailer lights. Still had the 30 year old uni-directional tires which was a bit worrisome. Needs a pintle hitch of course, not a bigee. My neighbor has a WWII 1/4 ton built by Bantam, the original jeep builder.

There used to be spare parts available from military vehicle restoration suppliers like this: https://www.armyjeepparts.com/c-17-m...QaAmECEALw_wcB

@Drednot - Wish I was that lucky! I paid 2022 prices<g>. Since a Coca-Cola cost .78 cents back then and now costs about $2.50, I'm in the same inflationary range!

The red wagon is now TOTALLY disassembled. I have all the replacement parts in hand, except one. I'm now starting to sand-blast, repair & repaint myself back to original state. I figure it will take MUCH less time & effort than the full frame-up restoration I did on my Series IIA. I did that back when you bought your trailer. I was much poorer back then and it was a beast to find parts in the US. I still have some old Rovers North catalogs lying around somewhere. Now I'm going thru the perennial question: What wheels & what tires! I'd pitch it to this group, but I don't know if that would start another mega thread... I'd love to match the Defender, but getting the hubs to conform may be more of a pita than I want to take on. Also, I don't want to perfectly match the color as I don't want to do that much body work on the trailer (cutting out and replacing the bottom of the body was enough!). I'll probably just go with a "close enough" battleship/naval gray.

Just picked this up last weekend! Super excited to drag it up to some of my favorite high-elevation lakes in CO. We love to camp and fish, and love it even more, when we can get to places most other folks can't. Granted I have the roof rack, but the reality for me has been that packing up enough to camp with adults and kids who are adult sized, the roof rack was just more hassle than I expected. So I began looking at either buying or building an off-road capable trailer.

At the end of my search I found Out of Bounds Trailers right here in Colorado. Hand-built one at a time completely from scratch by the owner, Greg. I was blown away at the quality and how meticulously the work was done. If you are in the market and in driving distance to Denver, give him a look. https://www.outofboundsoffroadtrailers.com/

Not affiliated whatsoever, just one of those situations where I was so happy with the product, and the owner/builder, Greg, is just such a nice guy that I hope nothing but the best for him and his company.

You need to listen to Click & Clack discussing how to find a Carburetor mechanics. Hilarious as they describe some decrepit old mechanic who can't retire.

Finally got the Kimberley back home - not my favorite camping conditions/locations but thought it was appropriate for this thread "...see what you're towing..." These give a general idea of overall size towing and setup, along with the towing relationship to the Defender 110x with the McHitch connection.

It was a quick turn around with Sep Defender delivery/pickup and Oct trailer delivery/pickup, but we're looking forward to some off-road appropriate settings now that both components are in hand!

The new trailer and defender owners

turning clearance 1

turning clearance 2

turning clearance 3 looking down with McHitch next to my right foot. The hitch articulates X-Y-Z for complete freedom or rotation

the tow bar allows for the defenders cargo door to fully open!

deployed state - manual or motorized vertical lift with manual queen size slide out bed. Propane outdoor galley with indoor galley with induction as a backup

surf board slide out table below queen size slide out bed

towing state

Which one of you got the big steak?

That's a great looking setup, Huc. If I were a tow-behind-camper sort of guy I'd be looking into that. My wife would probably agree to go camping with me if I had something like that. Which is why I don't have something like that.
