Default Mud Flap Effectiveness

Question for those with mud flaps: do they do an adequate job of keeping mud and debris off the side of the vehicle? Do the smaller mud flaps do the job?

I am pretty ambivalent about mud flaps. Would go without them but getting so much dirt and mud that I am considering them. This is for around town and light off road. First choice would be the “new” flaps but would consider the classic if that’s what it takes.

The flair over the rear tires catches a lot. I did not go with flaps since I do plan for quite a bit of off-roading and in very rocky areas which means flaps won't last long.

That said, I went with the checkered protection panels, one of which sits right where most debris hits the rear fender flare. Plus I think they look cool.

I have the Classic mudflaps on mine and like them, but they also match the on my 89 110. I had the same concerns and had the same problem with my LR3 and wanted to make sure I didn't get any mud etc up on the body. They look kinda big at first, but I grew to like them. I also just installed the wheel arch protectors, didn't think I'd like them at first, but they look 'right' on it.

i have the classics and j can vouch that they do a great job on keeping almost everything off the fenders. Didn’t even realize it as you don’t pay attention to stuff like that but it hit me last weekend. i had washed my cars a couple of times and didn’t put any tire gel on since i got the car in Dec. My K02’s were turning brown and i lathered normally what would be way too much tire gel and splatter all over my fenders. Not a drop on the car

but i haven’t had a chance to off road yet but will in the future. like to see how they hold up. i would be more concerned of the piece that the flaps attach would pull off the car than destroying the flaps

Anyone have the "standard" mud flaps who can let us know their effectiveness? The classics are just too big for me.
