Default MY2025 Factory Brake Size with 22 Wheels vs 20 Wheels

Hello

Am deciding between 20 and 22 wheels

22 are wider with 275 while 20 is 255

I also happened to notice the brake discs and calipers looked different!

Do you also get bigger brakes with 22 ?

Both are HSE with X Dynamic Pack

Please see pictures attached.

Sales person was a bit vague to seeking help here.

Thanks!

22 inch with different looking brake discs and calipers

20 inch with silver calipers and matt silver hub that looks different than 22 inch pictured

The main thing that changes the brakes is the engine as far as I know. Do they have the same engine? The D200, D250 and P300 all have ‘small’ brakes while the more powerful engines have bigger ones. Also, are the both photos on the same side (front/back) of the car? The front brakes are different from the rear.
The wheels don’t (well shouldn’t) have an affect on brake size.

Both are P 400 and X Dynamic

All options same, except wheel size from factory

The pictures are front calipers for both

Many thanks!

That’s strange. That big silver bit with the ridges is for the ABS, so it doesn’t make sense why the 22’s don’t have it. Are the photos on the literal same side of the car (left right) even though I would think that wouldn’t make a difference. The calipers look to be the same
FYI X-Dynamic is literally just a trim level - in fact there is both SE X-Dynamic and HSE X-Dynamic.

Apparently the brakes are bigger on P400 with 22” and X Dynamic Pack in comparison to P400 with 20” and X Dynamic

More pictures attached

Both pictures for front passenger side wheel

This is pretty strange. Our current Defender (D300, 110) came with 22’s and we swapped to 20’s just fine. The centre bit of the brake disc looks like the photo you sent of the brakes on the car with the 22’s, while our old Defender (P400, 90) which came factory with 20’s looks more like the photo of the 20’s brakes that you sent. The actual shape of the brake caliper appears to be the same, and the size of the disc is the same - the only difference is that big centre thing. Does one of them have like an offroad pack or any differing option? Or is it legitimately just the wheels.

So my understanding is that the brake disc size does change with the wheel size, not the 'spec level'. So if you get the 22inch wheels you get the larger 6-pot front brakes (380mm front, 365mm rear). If you get the 20inch wheels you get the 4-pot front brakes (363mm front and 350mm rear)

However - that's not an 'essential' for wheel sizing as you can still fit the 20inch wheels over the larger 380mm brakes. And can of course put 22 inch wheels when you have the smaller caliper

But - if you have the larger 380mm brakes you can't downsize to a 19inch wheel. Whereas the smaller brakes that come on the 20inch wheel you can step down to a 19inch wheel

Confused? This may not be 100pc true eg I could see that a full X spec (not x dynamic) might anyway have the larger brakes but that doesn't seem to be the case..

The larger brakes actually say 'brembo 6' or something like that on the caliper so should be easy to check which you have

If I were you I would get the 22s if you're not driving off road. There is still plenty of sidewall and they drive very well. No comfort issues in my view

I am downsizing to 20inch wheels (still with the larger 380mm brakes) for my winter tires

Just to add some more confusion....I have a 2022 110 HSE X-Dynamics P400 with 22" Style 5098 wheels. On my order details sheet it says: "020JD 398mm front and 380mm rear brakes". I never measured it and never tried to fit 20" wheels.

It's a bit counter intuitive. 22" on the high trims do get noticeably bigger calipers than when you option 20" wheels on the exact same vehicle. You have a keen eye for detail. (Maybe rotors too. Unsure. But the calipers are bigger).

P400 & V8 for sure. I remember it being X and V8 specific -- it may have now trickled down to any P400 with the 22" wheels (ie SE, X-Dynamic, XS or whatever they are calling the vehicle trims now.

So or example a P400 110 X with 20" wheels indeed has slightly smaller front calipers than a P400 110 X with 22" wheels that Is otherwise the exact same car.

Caused a ruckus a few years ago at launch. No one understood why or what.

You can still retrofit 20" wheels over those larger calipers if you want to down the road btw. The 20" wheels still fit over the larger calipers.

Have I confused you further? Hopefully I got that all right. Someone will correct me if I did not I'm sure.

There are 3 dimeter rotors on the Defender trims. Hard to believe anyone would electively introduce such needless complexity into their assembly line but there you go.

OEM 20"s and OEM 22"s
fit all Defenders. No exceptions. None.

Some P400s (and possibly D300s) that come with factory 22"s come with the largest of the 3 brake rotor options.
20" is the smallest rim that will fit over the brakes on these, same applies to the V8s.

19"s fit all except the V8 and the P400/ D300 subset I mentioned above

18" fit P300 D200 D240 D250 only.*

*unless you give the rear calipers a short back and sides

In a sane world, we'd have 17" rims as standard and the 18"s would be the upsized urban option.
