Default New rear differential

Hello everyone, I just wanted to let everyone know that my rear differential had to be replaced because I believe the locker was not working properly or loose as it made a thump every time I went around a corner or from reverse to forward. Just a FYI. Have not seen the bill yet but I believe it is in the neighborhood of 7k installed.

l've heard of this before, but flushing and changing the oil usually cures it.

Yeah. Flush it a couple of times. That is the LR service bulletin for these.

A known design failure apparently. Sounds like a well devised kick-the-can bandaid by LR. Get the vehicle out of warranty, then ask you to bend over choose your barrel.

At 62,000+ miles and $7k for the OP, they seem to have found him a nice rusty one.

I'd be just flushing the diff and living with the clunk till I sold it on.

Default Flush

I had it flushed but only got worse. So I took it in for an oil change and had them look at it and they decided to change it out. I asked to see it before they ship it off but I don’t think they will let me have a look at the interior.

Is the rear diff the same in the V8’s? Seems like all these have been in P300 and P400’s.

They are similar but the gear ratios are different.

The noise will get very loud and almost intolerable. The flush typically remedies it for a short time but the noise comes back worse in most cases.

Well, reading this l am glad l didn't specify the off road pack with e-differentials then.

In the U.K. l've read of similar issues but flushing and changing the oil seems to permanently cure it.

Yep. We do not spec them in our builds. This is one of a couple reasons we prefer the standard differential.

Wouldn't the diff be part of the powertrain? That should have a much longer warranty.
