Default No love for auto start/stop

Looks like things are heating up: https://autos.yahoo.com/epa-chief-au...160000674.html

I've given it a try for some 1,500 miles and have to say I'm ready to join the haters' club. I think this feature is the main reason my vehicle is getting about 12mpg - my usual rides are very short, but (or should I say "and"?) with four to six points where I have to stop and this feature has a chance to catch me off guard.

Whoever designed it definitely didn't make it smart enough to realize that it is probably not the smartest idea to shut off the engine while it is still cold. They also weren't smart enough to prevent a situation where I stop, the engine shuts off - and turns back on within less than a second (designing similar systems, I refuse to believe this couldn't be predicted). Or when I stop with the blinker on and will have to step on it in less than five seconds.

And all that disregards the fact that the extra energy spent on starting the engine will have to come from somewhere - and the engine will have to work harder and spend more gas to charge the battery.

This could've been implemented much better.

Getting disabled as soon as I remember to get to it.

PS: Don't get me started on adaptive cruise control PID tuning.

Add me to that camp. I never use Stop/Start, it’s my second action after pushing the Engine Start button. Followed by disabling ‘Emergency Braking’ and ‘Emergency Lane Keeping’. Besides being annoying, seems to me they can cause more harm than they avoid. Rarely use cruise control, so Adaptive CC to me is useless. I enjoy the act of driving, I don’t want a vehicle driving me. FSD Tesla? Couldn’t give me a free one.

A lot of us bought Gap ID tool just to turn this feature off (change to: remember last setting).

I hate auto stop/start as much as everyone else, but when implemented with a 48v mild hybrid system, it is virtually seamless, mainly in the current Mercedes, BMW, and the absolute garbage Volvo products. P400s have much smoother stop/start than my P300. Luckily mine is coded to never turn on unless I turn it back on.

Definitely in the hating auto start/stop camp, but I also agree with Cincy Rovers. If I forget to hit the button in the Defender, it is a slight annoyance. In several other vehicles I have driven it has ranged from noticeable (F-150) to downright jarring (my new Subaru Outback). I'd love to see LR come out with an OTA update that leaves it in last setting, but I won't be holding my breath even with the recent statements from the EPA.

Another thing to know is that my old 2015 Mini Cooper S had premature upper engine mount failure which suspected to be caused by auto engine start/stop.

You can use the GAP tool or have someone with access to JLR"s Pathfinder software program it to remember the last setting.

It can't go away fast enough for me. Not only is it annoying but implementation varies among manufacturers. My wife's BMW "stops" while you are approaching a stop. Not after. So if you go to pull the car into the garage as you slow down it "stops" the engine, then when you hit the gas to start it again it lurches forward. A real safety hazard in my opinion. BMW also removed the disable button from the center console in recent years so the only way to one-time disable it is thru the on-screen menu. LR actually does a better job with this. But it still is annoying.

Hate how many automakers are burying it in menus instead of being a physical button. All of the Jaguars as well as every Range Rover variant and Discovery Sport all have it in the settings menu, but at least it is inly one tap away at all times. I'm glad I have my auto stop/start memory enables, and I'm glad my Macan has auto stop/start memory from the factory.
