oil change
I searched the forum but did not find a good answer...so I have a 24 P300 with 500 miles on it so far!! but in reading about the oil change I have to say the recommendation is crazy....I am planning on an oil change at 1000 miles or so, there is no way a new engine break in that it will go that long without the oil breaking down...to me that is a set up for problems....what have others done? to me it's cheap insurance and I'll continue to change every 5K miles max.

It really depends on how you want to approach it. Folks here change it in many different ways, including me. I have a v6 that my wife drives less than 9k city miles annually, so JLR Sewell of North Austin told me to just bring it in every 2 years or 21,000 miles. I drive the v8 and I bring it in every year regardless of how many miles it has.
l wouldn't change the oil at 1,000 miles, engine and oil technology has moved on from the days when the oil was changed after "running in".
Change it at 5,000 and again at 10,000 miles.
After that, every 10,000 should be fine.
If the vehicle is subject to extreme conditions such as repeated and serious off-road, heavy towing or high ambient temperatures over 50deg C, l might change the oil every 5,000 miles.
lt certainly won't do any harm, it will make you feel better, and it's a lot cheaper than a new engine.

I agree with that stance, 10k miles or 1 year, whatever comes first. But after reading a lot of these posts, there are a good percentage of people who are determined to ignore the recommendations and change it every 3-5 thousand miles, disregarding the fact that newer manufactured engines don’t need a ‘break in’ period like we grew up with when you did just that; change it after a few hundred miles, after the ‘break in’. Lots of wasted money and time. And it’s not just JLR, most new vehicles manufacturers recommendations have upped the mileage between oil changes. Times, and vehicle technology have changed.
you are doing a disservice to your Defender if you only drive it on road.
This thread reminds me of 1994 thru 2007 when our family motor pool included Audis. Audi used a special break-in oil that you didn't dare change until 5000 miles. If you did, your Audi engine would consume more oil for the rest of it's life. I don't know the engineering science behind this, but the issue was well documented in the Audi forums.
My experience with Land Rover is just cut the recommended oil change interval in half. The recommended LR4 change interval was 15K. I went with changing it every 7500 miles and never had the very common timing chain guide issues that others had. My LR4 engine was still quiet at 200K miles when I sold it.
Using this logic, I'm changing the Defender oil every 10K miles with Liqui Moly, Easiest oil change ever when using an extractor.
