so you change the oil yourself? I never used an extractor before but it may be simpler overall...always did the drain plug exercise...
I'm sure dealer service departments use an extractor as well. No way are they taking off the Defender skid plates to drain the oil. Taking off the 15 or so rusted bolts to get the heavy skid plate off the LR3 was never fun, especially with 5000 mile interval oil changes. That really durable 4.4 Jaguar engine required regular (not synthetic) oil.

My dealer takes off the skid plates and does it the old fashioned way.
Audi certainly used break-in oil in the 1996 thru 1998 A4's with the 2.8. People with that engine in the US that changed the oil too soon were adding a quart of oil per month.
My D110 V8 has 1,286 miles and is at the dealership now getting the first oil change done. I wanted to do it around 1,000 miles but went over due to a weekend trip to AZ to see my parents. I'd rather err on the side of caution and change the oil more on a traditional oil change schedule. 1k for new engine and then every 5k thereafter.
Really not seeing how a vacuum method precludes getting an oil sample. I do it with mine.
Extract 8.8 L of old oil into previously used vacuum w/some old oil and extract sample.
Lets be over the top with our estimates and say there is 5ml of contaminant old oil and your engine burned 0.5L of oil and there is a completely homogenous mix of oils.
That' 5/8300 is old oil or 0.06% contamination.
In reality there is even less as there is nowhere near 5ml of old oil in there, and I'm extracting much closer to 8.8L and the old oil will not be fully mixed with the contaminants on the walls/tubing.
This is a non-issue. The vacuum method has all upsides and no down.
Fair enough but the numbers just don't justify concern. This is homeopathic level concentrations almost. Probably less than 1 part in 10,000.
At $35 an analysis I'm not expecting forensic accuracy.
I also don't see the logic in doing 2 oil changes before 100 miles or using oil not recommended. Non synthetic/mix etc. 5W-20 (perhaps that was for a diesel, of which I am less familiar)
I have P400 so it's always 0W-20 that meets the required LR specs.
I would argue there is zero cogent rationale to support these nonsensical early changes, I'd need an oil change after driving the car home from the showroom and another after driving to the store to buy oil. .
I have not had any analysis done, but I am.okd school. Used to insist on every 3000 miles with Dino oil. Begrudgingly went to 5000 after full synthetic for 2 years and now very content with 10k changes. I just can't see pushing 21k in this vehicle or any other.
I suppose the logic is most don't keep them 50k miles, so one oil change over the life of ownership?
