I found out from Castrol that the off the shelves 5 qt doesn’t not meet the JLR spec so I ended up getting the factory oil at the dealer.

 

Help 2 liters short. Twice I’ve tried to extract all the oil with my Mityvac. And I know I’m at the base of the oil pan. But I only get 6 1/2 quarts out. Sorry 6 1/2 L. One time I did it on level ground one time I did it with the front end slightly lower to see if more oil and come down. I do have the P 400 engine. What am I doing wrong?

 

The Mityvac I used for my old LR4 was a bit too small to extract all of the oil from the Defender (I believe the capacity was 8 liters or so), I had to "upgrade" to a larger pump with a 9.5-liter capacity so I could vacuum all the oil in one shot, and with the warm oil naturally growing in volume, even that capacity is barely sufficient, as you can see in the video. Are you sure it's not just the pump shutting off prematurely because it's almost full (it does have an overflow control valve, IIRC), rather than because all your oil is extracted?

Also, how do you know for sure that the vacuum pipe is at the bottom of the sump? It could be too long (and could possibly curl back up when it touches bottom), or too short, and in either case you could leave a couple of quarts of oil in there.

 

Thanks for the video, I used it on my 2020 L405 P400 MHEV. Hardest part was sourcing the oil, I ended up buying the Liqui Moly LM20410 from FCP Euro.

How do you reset the service required notification? I've tried what I normally use for a 2014 Range Rover and 2018 Sport SVR, but it doesn't work. Is the process different?

 

I haven't tried it myself, but this should be the procedure for the 2020+ Defender:

1) Turn ignition on without starting the engine (press Start / Stop button without pressing the brake pedal)
2) Open the hood / bonnet
3) Open the driver's door
4) Fully press the brake pedal, THEN the accelerator pedal and hold them fully pressed together for about 10 seconds (make sure the brake pedal is pressed before the gas pedal, or the routine will fail.)
5) A "Service Reset" message should pop up in the instrument cluster
6) Release accelerator and brake pedals, turn ignition off
7) Turn ignition back on and check to make sure the service message is gone
8) Close the hood and driver's door, done. If message is still there, repeat the procedure.

 

Thank you @umbertob , that worked. Minor irrelevant correction for future folks. Drivers door has to open first due to hood release design.

The part I had wrong was the brake THEN accelerator pedal.

Just curious if anyone knows the price of an oil service from the dealership?

For those who have done their own oil/filter change, aside from labor, what was the cost of materials?

It sounds like our only two options for oil service is to perform it ourselves or have the dealer do it. From the comments above, I assume taking our trucks to a 3rd party oil change shop is out of the question?

Service reset - open driver's door, open hood, ignition on (not engine), press the Brake...THEN add accelerator pedal, will say resetting followed by reset.

 

That oil apparently meets the specifications and seems like a very attractive option, but is there any definitive information on whether using something other than the Castrol could negatively affect warranty coverage?
