A little off-topic, but I wonder about the value of an aftermarket exhaust when most of the sound you hear inside in a stock P400 is from the speakers? Real sound on top of fake sound? Hmm.
(I think fake sound is insultingly ridiculous and ultimately tiresome.)
Thankfully the GAP tool allows you to turn this nonsense off!
The exhaust got delivered Tuesday, I just unwrapped it all. Packaged very well. One bracket that is a stabilizer between the two midpipes got slightly bent and I bent it back. It looks pretty nice for the cost!
Will hopefully get it on in the next day or two.
Following. Can't wait to hear a better review of it. Frankly I can't bring myself to spend as much as all the big name options out there for some metal pipes on a family SUV. A proper exhaust for my M3 or my S2000 fine, but those price tags just to lose the muffler (all I'm really after) is a super tough pill to swallow. $1k or so for the ali express option is at least 'reasonable'
Got it on last night, only driven it once today so far, I think it would be better with a resonator. Going to give it a few days of driving, definitely sounds great, but I wanted to have it both ways, a little louder and then still be able to be somewhat quiet. It is quiet, but I’m afraid it may have drone, I need to give it more time. I may end up having a factory resonator welded into the front of it. We will see.
Definitely has pops and bangs on decel.
… it sounds the best… looks good, doesn’t drone and it’s the cheapest of the lot, although it doesn’t have valves.
But, I’d counter that adding a valved exhaust to a car that doesn’t already have a valved system integrated into the engine mgmt systems is a fiddly process and I as a rule don’t do it. Who wants something like an “app” for your exhaust?. Not me.
Clicked the link you provided to the New Defender Mods exhaust and like what I see so far. Very simple system, looks like an easy install needing no special modifications. The sound from the video clips provided on the NDM website seems right in the middle, not too loud, but with a nice throaty note. Question is, listening to a video clip is one thing, but how does it sound in real life? Anyone installed this exhaust mod from New Defender Mods? Would like to hear feedback from an end user. I am definitely interested in doing this exhaust swap once I’m sold on it.
Okay, I’ve had it on the car a little over a week now and probably 800 miles, did a lot more driving the last week than I have in a long time due to being in the middle of a move.
With the valves closed, it’s only slightly louder than stock at idle and around town. On the highway I don’t think it’s even noticeable, no drone or noise.
With the valves open, it’s quite a bit louder, cold starts are LOUD and it’s a decent sound, typical inline 6 sound similar to a lot of the bmws. It sounds good. It’s fine on the highway, and I say it’s fine because I know I can shut the valves and it will be quiet. If I couldn’t shut the valves off I would probably be putting in a resonator.
Daily driving in quiet mode is not sure anyone would really notice a difference. With the valves open in regular comfort/drive modes it sounds good and had a little bit of pops on deceleration. Comfort/sport drive the pops are quite a bit more. Dynamic and drive/sport drive don’t have as many pops. I remember that being the same way on the Macan GTS and Cayenne GTS we had. Sport plus would always get rid of the pops and bangs and farts on shifting. Defender doesn’t have any shift farts thankfully even though it’s a very similar transmission that was in the cayenne 3.6 v6TT GTS.
All in all, it seems like pretty good quality, the electric valves are Chinese knock off of the original valves used on the v8. I am going to work on pivi programming to see if I can enable the exhaust button in pivi dynamic and then wire the aftermarket valves into the car.
I’ve recently scored a deal on an oem 11.4” screen and OEM LHD Matrix headlights, L8B2-13W029-HJ and L8B2-13W03-HJ so I will be doing the pivi screen swap later this week and headlights once they arrive, then probably dig into the programming while doing the screen.
