I am in the fortunate position of deciding between black vs grey, and between Charente Grey vs Narvik to be specific.
IF, I were to get the Narvik Black, it would also become either the factory or custom PPF matte/satin. If I chose the metallic brown-grey Charente, I'm not sure I would do the matte PPF.
This is because it might be nice in matte, but it may not be much different, whereas the black turned into matte, is a very significant transformation. If the choice were the metallic Santorini, then I'd probably leave it alone for sure as I have been fine with my RR that way.
There is something about the body panel shapes that makes me lean into matte black but then the Charente looks so very nice.
Given the color choices, I'm guessing you're talkinga bout the Octa. That said if it were me I'd choose one of the two colors that are truly unique to the Octa, petro or sargasso. I know the black and gray aren't the same as santorini or carpathian, but its less noticable unless you know what you're looking for.
That said. If it were me and only could chose between the two you've mentioned. i'd go black, given the OCTA Black is its own special/unique package/trim.
Also you meniton metallic brown-grey Charente, having a brown ish hue. I'm not sure I see that? Looks grey to me? But i've never seen it in person.
Regardless I'd skip Matte. Personally not worth the upkeep, and its just too trendy IMO. Gloss all the way. All this is all subjective of course. Its your $170k... spend it in whatever way makes you happy

B-I hear you on the PPF. My LR3 has years and miles of memories shown in its body panels which is not a bad thing.
C-here are a few iphone photos I took this week of the Charente.
Also my first Land Rover, the 96 Disco, the 2nd, 2004 Disco and the LR3, all of which I still own but the Disco 1 needs a new home !
I used to have a Gallapagos Grey VW Touareg V10 tdi 2008 and this is the closest I've seen to that paint. VW photo also shown.

Reason: accuracy
A-I am a de-badge type. Meaning, we would probably even remove the little emblem from the side panels to just let it be a Defender.

That Galapagos Grey on your Touareg is a beautiful color - I have a friend with PTS Galapagos Grey 997.2 Turbo S Cabrio, and it is stunning.
The Charente Grey is very close. Gorgeous color in person.

Yeah, that VW was nice in that paint. I bet it's pretty cool on a small car too. I'm leaning toward black, but 100% with PPF matte. I need to go and have the Charente OCTA parked next to a black 110 to decide.

I would say the upkeep is tremendously less with the satin/matte PPF (I hate the LR calls it matte because its really a satin finish). I have a black V8 that I just had wrapped in Satin PPF, and it makes it so much nicer to keep it clean. I am **** about my paint, and now i do not really have to worry about swirl marks or minor imperfections - I can also use a quick detailer at times instead of having to do a full wash without the worry I would have on a non-PPF car
