Potential owner
Hi!!! Been researching between GX550 and Defender...anyone else do this comparison and what did you learn. Looking at a 110 4 cyl which for me has ample power and saves money for accessories. I found one in the stone color....How does everyone like their 4 cyl is it ample for your needs? all highway here no off roading. also looking at a few accessories...also did you find the dealer willing to deal?? are they stuck on MSRP sticker price???
any thoughts are appreciated!!
Thanks

The 4 cylinder Defender P300 is fine, and it will be a much better off road vehicle than the Lexus. Toyota and Lexus have recalled all their new Lexus and Toyota cars with their newest engines due to engine failures, and they are replacing over 200000 engines. The GX550 has one of the new engines to the best of my recollection.
I've had my P300 for three and a half years and it has been pretty much flawless. It has plenty of power, but if you floor it above 85 mph or so is pretty much the only time I feel like it could use a bit more power. The ride quality and body control is much better than the GX, IMO. I took delivery of mine in January 2021 right before lead times took 6+ months. Since I was a 3x customer of my dealer, they gave me $500 off. Now you can usually get a couple grand off MSRP these days. It's been a while since I've seen a Defender go for over MSRP.
If you’re driving alone and without a lot of weight, then the P300 is probably fine. If you were taking a number of passengers along with their luggage, I’d strongly recommend the P400.
It never lacks power in any situation, even when fully loaded

I took three passengers and probably 200 lbs of cargo on a weekend trip last year and I had no problems at all. I hardly noticed a difference in performance. I wouldn't be surprised if the P300 is slightly underrated, as many European cars these days are. For example, my 2023 Porsche Macan S is rated at 375 horsepower, but it actually makes 420 at the crank. Funnily enough, the P300 110 was originally rated at 0-60 in 7.7 seconds, but instrumented tests averaged in the low 7 second range, so JLR dropped the time to 7.0 seconds on their website. The P400 110 is rated at 5.8 seconds to 60, but in instrumented testing it is between 6.2 and 6.5 seconds. Not that it matters; these aren't drag racing machines.
I have a P300 and pack it with 4 adults, a double stack race boat trailer and all of our weather gear for a long weekend. It's probably overloaded based on the door card info, but it works pretty decent. For daily driving it's perfect for what I need. Decent enough mpg, acceleration is more than fine. I have not experienced what others call turbo lag. It's possibly derived from how people drive, but I find the torque curve is very evenly distributed and smooth. If you look at the torque specs, you're getting max torque at 1500rpm, which is insanely low and would not indicate that there is any lag in the system.

I've yet to regret the decision to get a P300.

I pull 4000 lb trailer with P300, pulls pretty good, in some ramp merging situations have to use S mode, but overall pretty good.
Use quality fuel.
Engine is low revving one, coupled with 4.1 final drive it's amazing.
