we just had our passenger light replaced.
This is more so what I’m asking. Are the new headlights any different?

Considering asking to swap to standard LEDs when mine inevitably bite the dust to avoid this fiasco again. What mileage did each of yours go out?

passenger went out around 30,000 miles.

I couldn’t get an update from my dealer if the replacement light was any different or a new part number…

Same here. Although mine says "renewed" in the invoice covered by warranty, which makes me think it is not a brand new one - instead one that was shot and somehow fixed. I may be wrong though. No idea. Oh! and lo and behold, my SA had no clue either.

That said, I would not change to the standard ones. The halos are a big part of the design that attracted me to the car and they look mean as hell.

2 questions:

1) Does anyone know what is technically happening with these lamps when the DRL LED goes out? Is it a wiring issue/circuit board/etc? I'd love more technical information or for someone with electrical knowledge to disassemble one and do a post up about it -- because I bet it's something simple (albeit in a sealed, non-serviceable unit)

2) I'm starting to wonder if this is a "when" not "if" -- ie will all of our 2020/2021 etc headlamps fail in this manner in the next couple years?

BTW in US, DRL not mandatory. This is not going to be a safety issue I wouldn't think. Perhaps if the actual turn indicators or low/high beams start going out... that's a safety issue and easily a recall (like the X rear lamps).

On my D250 you can turn off the DRL's but it's the basic headlights with no halo.
The DRL seems to be in the same part of the lamp as the indicator as when you use the indicators the corresponding DRL disappears and is replaced by the orange flashing light.

Powerful U.K. are offering replacement premium halo headlights for about 1/5 the cost of LR.

Hopefully these are made elsewhere and will last longer.

I’ve had 4 headlight fail on my 2021 Defender 110SE. 2 halos out and 2 head lamps out. Weeks for parts to show up.

LED assy is running too hot, burning itself and sometimes the lightguide at the place of contact.

If you have an IIDTool (as if we needed one more reason to own that amazing little box...), I think I have found a way to disable the DRL feature in our premium headlights, it involves changing one MultiCAN parameter in the CCF:

MultiCAN-468 FntDRLType
Current: Incorporated DRL and Pos
New: No DRL

After writing the revised CCF to the car, the "signature" LEDs will still turn on along with high or low beams, but will stay off when the main headlamps are off. Automatic headlamps and AHBA, if your car is so equipped, will still operate as usual. Works on my 2020 X.

When you say the glass is shattered, is it so in the inside of the headlamp or from the outside? If it is from the outside, I am afraid no one can cover it under warranty. Something must have hit it to crack from the outside. Whatever hit it from the outside hit the headlamp alone and that is why nothing hit the vehicle itself. Sorry about your dilemma.
