Real-life off-road towing is impressive
Inspired by the traction finding capability of the New Defender, its new Nitto Ridge Grapplers at 50 psi rear/47 psi front set for towing (the tire brand the result of all your inputs, thank you), and the P300 4 cylinder's success with larger and larger tow loads, I temporarily put aside my LR4 V8 with 20" AT tires and took my 2020 110S up over the mountains (7 percent grade interstate) with a 5000+ lb combined trailer / lumber load to go off-road to a farm construction site.
True, at 5000 lbs up over the mountains at 60 mph, I would have felt a bit exposed in the P300 on an L.A. freeway -- the right lane would be my home. Otherwise, she did just fine on my country interstate -- well, actually better than just fine. For some reason the Defender feels more composed towing than even the LR4 -- maybe it has to do with body ridigity? And what a motor / transmission drive train ! Also, I think my vehicle really benefits from the down low added weight of the rock sliders and the winch.
Approaching the construcion site it had rained steadily all day, mud was everywhere -- no vegetation to help. Even so, I successfully climbed a 25 degree vertical, rounded dome to reach the work site.
It was just me, so I took no external photos... but in the pictures here you can see the amount of mud which was spraying as I started from a full stop at the base of the hill, then held the throttle steady at 3200 - 3500 rpms, low range, mud ruts mode, DSC OFF. I gave it very little steering input. She just steadily yawed + - 10 degrees back and forth around the radius of curvature of the mound at a couple mph, steadily inching her way up the 15 foot vertical, 25 degree climb -- finding traction at about 4 to 5 inches deep and clearing a path the entire way.
So glad I let the LR4 stay in the barn ......... she would not have made it.
check out the height of the mud on the trailer's front and the distance to the fender
No airing down -- throwing mud at 47 psi front and 50 psi rear while towing
Yep -- I was in trouble with my car cleaner when I got home.
Enjoy !!
