Default Replace windshield for this?

Driving behind a car going 20 today and it shot a small rock at my windshield. It was moving so slow I saw it coming.. was surprised it did this much damage.

They usually fill these types of cracks in with resin right? Or should they replace the windshield over this? It’s heated as well so I’m sure there’s gonna be a problem getting one..

My insurance company uses resin on those, but just to stop them from getting worse. The way that one spidered out I bet when they inject it, it spreads out and makes it worse.

I'd have it injected, if it holds then good, otherwise you're on another adventure to get the right windshield replacement. Take a picture of the little graphic in the bottom drivers side so you know which one is factory and that they replace it like for like.

you can probably get away with resin and it'll make it much less noticeable, if not look like it's gone.

My 2022 had a nasty chip like that in the center a few inches lower than the rear view mirror. It did not pass Maryland inspection and I had to replace the windshield. I had to pay $500 deductable for a factory windshield. Safelite did the install and everything is fine. I was going to have it done at my house but the manager called and said he saw the vehicle and wanted it done in their big warehouse facility near me. They did a great job. No scratches, or damage and everything is properly back in place.

Definitely resin inject it. I've done it with a couple windshields and they really did a good job. Hardly noticeable. Also, considering the alternatives (cost, time to get changed, chance of supply issues), it would be a no brainer for me. Good luck whichever way you go.

I had Safelite repair my last windshield chip, it was covered by my insurance. I think if the crack is smaller than 6" they can fix it. Luckily it wasn't in my line of sight, otherwise I would've replaced the windshield. Good luck!

Agree w/ @Denk . The key here is: is it in your main field of view or not. Mine, also, wasn't so it was an easy / quick / no brainer for me. But, it also wasn't on my Defender! Again, good luck.

when I had this star type of crack, I was told if its larger than a quarter they will not repair but replace as it hard to get the resin to fill the full crack if its too large.

In my experience, opting for windshield repair resin is often the first course of action for smaller cracks caused by rock chips. It's surprising how much resilience such a simple solution offers. I've had success with Crack Eraser's windshield repair resin collection in similar situations, and it's worth exploring before considering a full windshield replacement, especially considering the potential hassle with a heated windshield. You can find more information on their products here.

I also had a chip repaired with resin by Safelite on my previous D90 last spring and they did a great job. Really didn't notice it much afterwards, looked kind of like a small bug splat but I really had to look for it.

I bypassed insurance altogether and I believe it cost about $160. The important thing is to get it fixed as soon as possible. The Safelite website lets you book an appointment which I was able to get the very next day.
