Hi all. I have the stock defender 110 roof rack installed on my vehicle. I am looking to add a roof top tent for seasonal adventures. When looking at mounting instructions - it appears the Land Rover roof rack will not work according to Thule. Does anyone have any experience or insight on this, or do I need to just get a different rack set. Thanks for the help. Pictures for reference.
The Land Rover Rack is not one of the type you re looking at. It is mounted to the track, not the edge or to a gutter. The issue with RTT's is when you go over a bump, it has quite a bit of down force on your rack. With the ones pictured they would tend to splay out and probably come insecure or come off entirely. The Land Rover is a track system, which is rated for I think it is 350 lbs static. I do not think you will have a problem with the RTT, unless it is over 350 lbs. Then it more, good luck getting it up there. Personally I use a rope & pulley hoist in my hanger to get it on and off. I think I am fortunate to be able to do it that way. Otherwise, you need a bit of a crowd to get them up there without damaging your roof. I do put some 1.5" closed cell foam on the roof, just in case while I install it.
I use the Camper Crane 2000 to get mine on and off my Front Runner rack/tray thing. Short of something like this or what Dogpilot is doing, you will definitely need at least one helper.
I have the CVT Mt Hood (size small), and it's mounted to the LR expedition rack with the U brackets that were included with the tent. I chose that tent because it fit the dimensions of the Land Rover rack almost perfectly, and it was cheaper than the LR branded Autohome tent. No issues/creaks after a year of driving with it, I hardly notice it's up there. I had it installed by GTFOverland in Long Beach, CA - they used a crane to drop it on the rack. If you're in the area, I'd highly recommend checking them out.
