Has anyone installed these SAE approved driving lights on a new Defender? I’m aware of the lazer lamp kit, but those are not SAE approved so not legal for on road use in my state or many others. Looking to boost the miserable high beams on our US model with a road legal SAE/dot approved led pair of driving lights and these are the only ones I’ve found. Looking for info on installation wiring and mounting. Would like to install them in the same place on the grill as the lazer lamp kit.

I wish someone would offer old school driving lights (rally), with front mounts. I’m not particularly fond of the modern lighting styles offered. They’re not even on modern Rally cars. Says enough IMHO. A pair of Super Oscars would look sick.

 

There are plenty of round shaped SAE approved driving lights on the market if that’s what you want.

 

@Tartan - Which lights do you have? I have the Premium LED and they are BRIGHT. I'm often flashed when it's in low beams and I'm embarrassed to get close behind some low vehicles on country roads. This thing lights things up.

I do LOVE the old round rally lights. I'm tossing a coin between a light bar like that and the round Baja Designs LP9. I'm sure I'll eventually mimic the Treks and install both! But in my old Mini Cooper, I loved those round rally lights.

 

I have the premium lights on my SE. Maybe I’m just getting old, but these are the worst high beams I’ve ever had. Low beams are fine, but the high beams just have no real throw. I drive in rural areas at night a lot and need to see animals on the road at a greater distance than the premium lights can light up. I like round driving lights too, but more on older cars. I think these bars will look better on the modern Defender. To keep them legal, I’ll have them turn on automatically with the high beams.

 

I’ve never once felt the low or high beam illumination on my Defender was a cause for any concern. I find them to be pretty effective. I also occasionally drive on unlit or poorly-lit country roads, and I’ve never really found myself wanting anything better.

 

@Tartan - I think you have a good point. I really can't tell much of a difference between high/low. Perhaps, low is higher than I want and high is lower!

 

I should add that I’ve had auxiliary driving lights on a few previous cars, so I have experience with what high powered high beams can offer, so maybe I’m just used to something much better now. I also have a bit of a lead foot and need better reach than the oem premiums. That said, my stock Volvo and Touareg lights were much better than these. Common complaint on the Facebook boards, so I know I’m not the only one. My wife even noticed it on the first drive. Her 12 year old A4 has much better high beams.

 

I am having the same issue. I was thinking my eyesight at night until I had a loaner Velar and did not have the problem. Defender lights are not horrible and I would say they are shorter and wider field of vision unlike like previous Discovery,RR sport, and LR4.
