Default Seeking advice on a purchase - 2021/2022 Defender 110 S/SE

Hello folks!

I’m in the process of test driving two Defenders and am seeking some advice on a pre owned purchase.

I have been looking at two vehicles: 2022 2.0L 4 Cylinder 110 S with 22k miles and a 2021 4.0L 6 Cylinder 110 SE with 48k.

I’ve been in love with this vehicle since childhood and am finally ready to take the plunge. We have 3 boys so this fits the bill despite not having a 3rd row. We have another larger vehicle for more bodies .

My questions…. is the 4 Cylinder a better purchase with the lower 22k miles over the 6 cylinder with 48k miles? Is the 6 Cylinder more reliable? Any major issues I should be concerned about? This will be my daily driver, but I work primarily from home so less concerned about gas mileage.

We also have some land that we can use this on and have started skiing with our boys. I did own a 2008 Discovery many years ago but it was a bit of a mess.

Any advice would be appreciated

The 6 cylinder is generally better regarded, it's a big vehicle and the larger engine is less stressed.

I would have to agree, as a daily driver the 6 cylinder is the sweet spot … even with the slightly higher mileage.

I'll be the contrarian.

The 4 cyl is an excellent engine that moves this vehicle amazingly well. It's also less complex than the 6 cyl, so theoretically less to go wrong/maintain.

I had the choice as I built mine to order. I couldn't justify the extra $10k, and I've been thrilled with mine.

I concur with Husy44, the 4 cyl is an excellent engine. I bought mine when I was stationed in Germany back in March of 2021 and had no issues passing on the autobahn, it's a nice peppy engine. I have had no issues since we have been back here in the states with passing, I love it. No real issues either as I have over 68k on mine. Well except for the windshield drama, but that's another story.

Highly recommend the 4cyl for the reasons above. Also has more room under the cargo floor since no 48v batteries. Also much lighter, approx 400lbs.
ON another note, you should look at how the vehicle is equipped. Usually a vin decode comparison can help with this. That way you can compare

Everyone naturally has different needs and preferences. Mine is for the inline 6 because the reliability has historically been no better or worse than the 4 cylinder. MPG is the same as the 4 cylinder which means the range is the same per tank. The inline 6 has 100 more hp and 100 more fp of torque. Not to say the 4 cylinder is horrible but you’re going to notice that 25% difference. Especially if you’re hauling 5 people and or a full load, or towing, or at elevation, or all of the above.

The inline 6 equipped models also get much better brakes than the 4 cylinder. Really important if you’re hauling 5 people and or a full load, or towing, or descending the mountains or all of the above. As for weight, according to LR, the 4 cylinder equipped 110s have the same curb weight specifications as the inline 6. However, the inline 6 has a higher tow rating.

Unless you're planning to buy an extended warranty I'd go with the 2022 with 22k miles. That should still have at least one year of warranty left plus another year if it's certified. I'd want that peace of mind in case you discover any unexpected surprises with the vehicle.

I've had both P300 and P400, and as others have said the P300 isn't bad by any means.

It really depends on how you are planning to use it. I have the 6 cyl 110 SE so that I can haul a heavy trailer. If not for that I would have purchased the 4 cyl. Keep in mind that the 4 will not be as quick off the starting line as the 6 if that's important to you.

I'm a fan of the 6 cylinder. Is it at a LR dealer? If so, have the dealer CPO it. It may add about $1000 to the price but then it would be under warranty for another 2 years or until 100K miles.
