I think on a sleek rig like a Porsche I can understand folks wanting to be rid of them. On something shaped like a fridge, extra visibility to its fat sides is no bad thing.
They also add a little illumination to nearby objects when moving in tight spots at night. Helps spot things in the 3d cameras as they get extremely close. Not a big benefit granted but no bad thing.
I agree. I don’t mind them as much on the Defender, and I don’t mind them at all if they’re well integrated. On my Porsche, they stick out like a sore thumb. For example, my old D5 the front side marker and reflectors were fully integrated into the headlights and you wouldn’t even realize they’re there. And since the taillights wrapped around the side, it didn’t have the need for dedicated rear side marker lights.
D5 side markers are discreetly integrated into the headlights.
I still stand by my statement that I don't care that much for the side markers, but the amber clearance lights on the US spec OCTA look bloody fantastic. They are neatly integrated into the grille and the CHMSL (center high-mounted stop light).
