I am noticing a sweet smell from my engine whenever I get home (regardless of time/distance driven).

I had a leak repaired about two months ago by my dealer and they replaced the water pump under warranty and then pressure tested it etc. I have the 2.0. I have been monitoring the coolant level, looking for drip, etc and don’t see anything.

Is this relatively normal (guessing no) or potential burn-off from the previous leak (possible)? The previous leak was very obvious and I could see the dribble. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

 

Mine (also the AJ200 I4) always has a slight coolant smell to it, despite the coolant being at the proper level and I recently had my dealer do extensive checks for a coolant leak. It has been like this since I took delivery in January 2021. My service advisor says it’s normal, and the organic coolant that is used always evaporates a bit and that causes the smell. I still had them do an overnight pressure test and found nothing at all. I still always keep a gallon of coolant under the cargo area floor just in case. I’ve driven countless JLR products with this engine and I’ve noticed a coolant smell on a lot of them.

 

exact same here, 2022 p300, almost always smells of coolant after a minimum of about 20 minutes driving. I also had it checked, even got them to check the aux radiator in the wheel arch as I had seem some say this was their cause. they found nothing, I've never had to top up the coolant either. it's puzzled me too. the system isn't open to air, it doesn't make sense to me that we can smell it. but as the coolant level doesn't drop it must either be a micro leak, or perhaps fumes are able to escape somehow?

 

I have a 2023 110 P400 with 27000 miles and it always smells like coolant but no puddles. Over the life I've only put in about 16oz of antifreeze total and the level is always around max.

 

I similarly had the sweet smell coming from my engine. For a while, I couldn’t find a leak and didn’t need to replace or add coolant. After a couple of months, I did need to add coolant. I brought it to the dealer and they checked it over and found a leak in the hose feeding the turbo. They replaced it as it impacts the turbo even though it never seemed to show the need for collant via a manual check of coolant level. I suggest you check on this.

 

Wouldn't a normal pressure test reveal this one? I think the common denominator is that the dealer wasn't able to find any leaks. Or is the turbo on a separate circuit?

 

Unfortunately, I don’t know the cooling system configuration well enough to know if turbo is on a separate system but inclined to say it is not as I did have to add coolant to the main system due to the turbo coolant hose leak. I would have thought a pressure test would find this leak but again, not sure about how the turbo coolant works to know is a pressure test would find this.

 

So I heard back from the shop — it’s the auxiliary radiator on the left side leaking, they found visible evidence. From what I’ve read this isn’t uncommon.

 

I need to check mine this seems to be common

 

if it is sweet smelling it is leaking somewhere - pitty
