Things I wish the Defender had.
This is excellent to hear! My concerns stem from my LR2, a 4 cyl at about 250 hp. When it's just a few passengers, it's totally great. But when I've taken it on long highway trips, the car's not that weighty & I can feel the car move a bit more than I'd like (again, only when loaded with luggage). It's about 3,500 lbs curb weight, and so the good performance with a loaded Defender you're having (which is great to hear) may have more to do with the weight of the Defender (which is adding another 1,000+ lbs), not the HP. When Defender first arrived on lots, I did test the 4 cyl out. Driving it (just me) it was great and plenty powerful enough. But prior to that, I had also tested a LC and a older GX (both had the V8) - driving those I realized hp doesn't always translate to fast - the GX was solid, but truck like, and the LC was great fun to drive and didn't seem "light" on the road in any way - but neither had a turbo to attract "performance" shoppers. So, I do have questions about how it would handle with a full load. I also suspected the 4 cyl engine is an upgraded version of what I have now in the LR2 - it's another 50 hp, but then it's lugging another 1,000 lbs. Does the extra 50 hp do the job on the larger frame? Tough to know ahead of experiencing it. If your experience is the 4 cyl can get loaded and then not get bounced around, that's great to hear, but I'll admit I'm a bit surprised to hear it.
So how about adding a vacuum/boost gauge to the display screen. I’m sure all the data is collected in the ECU. Why not show it? It would be nice to know when you’re saving on the gas or pouring on the coal. Just a thought.
I recommend you look at the Discovery. The storage on the interior is top notch. Everything can be hidden out of sight. And two glove boxes.
(I'm not among them)
A decent capacity battery and an upgraded alternator. Both are way too small for the demand placed on them for all the tech. Then some kind of field mode without all the tech turning on every time I open the door.
Lol…I know. I get it. It is a huge departure from the classic looks of the LR3/4. But honestly it has been a great vehicle and a gate-way drug to the JLR world. The looks have definitely grown one me over time. LOVE the diesel and a shame JLR no longer offers it. I’ve kept it much longer than expected and my relatives all love some of the cross-country trips we have done. No mechanic issues whatsoever ever. Just the well known windshield leak which was caught early so no further issues once it was replaced. Anyway, probably should hang onto it, but really want the Defender.
