Default Tire and Load placard BS?

When I was shopping for a new tow vehicle one of the most important metrics I was cking the Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings and obviously the towing capacity.
As I decided the Defender 110 p300 with air suspension that has the published specifications that fill all our needs and then some.
As listed in an owners manual I browsed at the dealer and all other information found on the internet the gvw weight is about 7,000# give or take and the curb weight is about 5,000#. So the payload is approximately 2,000#ish.
when I looked at several 110 Defenders at the dealer all the Tire and weight placards on the driver's door jam don't come even close(less than half) the the vehicles carrying capacity. WHAT GIVES?
If I put 500# of trailer tongue weight on the hitch and 325#s of me, wife, and dog the remaining capacity isn't enough to support a bagged lunch.
How is this placard so WRONG and is it the legal final word on load capacity?

I'm really surprised that this oversight is not a major topic on this vehicle. Surely US owners have noticed this rather serious error.

What defender 110 is anywhere near 5000 lbs? I thought they were all more like 5500 ?
edit, now that i've checked, apparently the p300 110 is really light, 5035 lbs
However, GVWR is showing more like 6,500 to 6,850 lbs, which is pretty much like the full size Land Rovers have been for a long time regardless of the model.

Also, so what? ? My LR3 weighs in around 8200-8400 lbs on trips and its factory curb weight is more than defenders.

This thread suggests that payload is a simple function of the number of configured seats

My point is the "official " capacities listed on the door jam doesn't come close to the capacities listed in the owners manual and other published numbers.

We packed our Defenders with over 2000 pounds of people and stuff for college move-in trips and they handled perfectly fine. Just be sure to run XL load-rated tires.

No question the defender is robust and the info in the owners manual says so. If you go by the capacity on the tire and load placard on the door jam you may be legally over loaded. What could happen if you get into an accident and your insurance says they won't cover the damages because according to the placard you're overloaded. This really concerns me and should concern every defender owner. The info on the placard is wrong.

It's not an unknown issue.
You're either going to abide by the GVWR sticker affixed to the vehicle or you're not. It's your choice. That's basically what it comes down to, right?

Yes, I agree. Although I doubt an officer will be checking that GVWR sticker when filling out an accident report. Unless of course you are doing something ridiculous, like the time I brought home 100 2x4's in our LR4.
